Combo Box Find Record Missing By Richard Rost 10 years ago Today's question comes from Stefan. He asks, "when I use the combo box wizard, I don't get the third option to find a record on my form based on the value I selected in my combo box." This is actually a very commonly asked question, which is why I'm putting it here in my blog. I've answered this question a couple of times in the Class Discussion Forum for this lesson, but since not everybody watches the class online, I'll answer it again here. HINT: to get the most out of my classes, you should watch them online using the Theater, and you should read ALL of the comments in the Class Discussion Forum for each lesson. Chances are, someone has already asked the question before! The answer to this particular question is that you need to make sure that your Form's Record Source property is set to a TABLE or SIMPLE QUERY. It cannot be an SQL STATEMENT. If you open up the Form Properties and see something like this in the Record Source then you have an SQL statement. SELECT FirstName, LastName FROM CustomerT WHERE State="FL" If this is the case, you will not get the third option to create a search combo box. You will need to change it to the table that contains all of the required fields. Likewise, if you have a real complex query with a bunch of joins as the record source, you may not see this option. You'll need to use a simpler query. As long as you follow my design techniques for building forms, you should be OK. Start off with a blank form in FORM DESIGN mode. Open up the properties and set the Record Source to the name of a TABLE, and then start building the form. You usually only get an SQL statement if you use the Form Wizard (which is an evil wizard). This topic is covered in Access Beginner 8.
