Putting Access Databases Online
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on Facebook Richard Rost on Twitter Richard Rost on Google Plus Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost

Now that Microsoft has dropped support for Access Web Databases, I've been getting LOTS of emails from people asking what the best way to share their Access data online is.

If you want to share data online using the Access database that you've built, the BEST way to do it is to upload the TABLES to an online SQL Server. You can get incredibly cheap hosting for this from most major ISPs (including the one we use, GoDaddy), and it's a relatively easy and secure way to share your data. You just have to upload the tables, link them to your Access front-end, and distribute that front-end file to whomever needs to use it. Plus, you can still develop additional solutions in another language like ASP to connect directly to the data from a web page, for example. I cover how to upload your Access tables to an online SQL Server database in Access Expert Level 24, Lesson 4.

Now, this isn't the best solution if you have a HUGE database. If you're talking about hundreds-of-thousands of records, then you might find this solution too slow. But, if you have a reasonably sized database, then this is a simple, inexpensive solution that may work well for most small and mid-sized businesses.

Will OneDrive work? I'm not familiar how to use it.

Reply from Alex Hedley:

Not a great solution due to sync conflicts but I'm sure people here have said they've used it without problems.

What does that mean?  Is that somewhere online? Are you saying to set up a server at home?  I don't understand your answer.

Reply from Alex Hedley:

Have you see Access Expert Level 24?
You can use MS SQL Server online.

Tried going to GoDaddy and what a mess! No one there seems to understand what I'm looking for. They keep trying to sell me an expensive product.  $949 for 36 months but will give me a starting deal for $579 for 36 months. Won't go shorter than 36 months.

Reply from Alex Hedley:

Might be worth using MS SQL Server instead.

I just got off of chat with Cheyenne at GoDaddy and she says that they no longer host MS Access Databases.  I told her that the information on their website said that Windows Classic Hosting Accounts allow for Access hosting and she said that is on their old platform and the new one does not. Any other suggestions for a cheap way to be able to have 2 people be able to use the database from different locations? I want to use it at my house and my son use it on his laptop where ever he is at. Thanks in advance

Reply from Alex Hedley:

Upload it to MS SQL Server instead, you can still connect to the data use Access as the FE.
