Video Server Issues
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on Twitter Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   2 years ago

Sorry folks, but it looks like our cloud storage provider, Wasabi, is having some technical problems. Some users reported earlier that our videos aren't playing, I checked their status page and it looks like they're having a domain hosting service problem at their end. Bottom line: nothing will play until they get their issue fixed.

I just switched to Wasabi a few months ago and this is the first major problem they've had. They've been very reliable, fast, and honestly a whole lot less expensive than my previous provider (AWS). So I can't complain. I was hoping the adage "you get what you pay for" wouldn't bite me in the behind, but we'll see. If the problem isn't fixed in a couple hours, I'll get on the horn with their tech support and be angry Hulk.

I apologize for the inconvenience. It's beyond my control at this point. However, in the mean time, you can enjoy some of my TechHelp videos. Those are all still hosted on YouTube, and they're working. :)

Seems like they fixed the problem on their end. It was a DNS issue which means if you can't still see their server, you have to wait for YOUR DNS to update. I know. It's a pain. I can watch my videos on my cell phone, but I can't watch them on my laptop yet because my office Internet DNS still hasn't updated. Give it a little time, it should come back online for you. Or, log on with your phone (and NOT on the same WiFi as your home/office).

The latest from Wasabi's status page: December 29, 2020 04:07 UTC: We are currently awaiting the restoral of the domain by our third-party domain name provider.  We do not have a restoral ETA at this point because we are dependent on the third-party domain name provider to take actions.

Latest update: December 29, 2020 12:40 UTC We continue to rely on the restoration of the domain from our registrar. No ETA has been provided yet, but well continue to update the status page every 2 hours or at any point where new updates are warranted.

Basically they're saying that they've fixed the problem, but they're still waiting on their domain registrar (the people who handle domain changes) to update everything. I already emailed them and Tweeted at them:

@wasabi_cloud this is RIDICULOUS guys. You've been down over 14 hours at this point. If you're not back online soon I'm switching back to AWS. Never had any issues with them.

I just tried playing some video and it seems to be working now. Fingers crossed that they fixed the problem.

I wrote an email to my rep over at Wasabi expressing my disappointment:

"As you're aware, your service is experiencing problems today. My whole site is down. I use Wasabi for hosting my video files. My site depends on video! I am aware that your technicians are aware of the problem, but I'm just voicing my disappointment. I switched to you from AWS expecting a smooth ride. I'm hoping this doesn't happen again."
