Microsoft Access Developer Network

Welcome to the Access Developer Network. If you are looking for someone to help you with your Microsoft Access database issues, troubleshoot problems, or even build a database for you, then you have come to the right place. For complete information on the Access Developer Network, please click here for details and instructions for posting.

Developer Students: if you're interested in picking up some consulting work, subscribe to this forum and receive an email update whenever new posts are added. You will also be notified by email if any conversations you are involved in receive new comments.

Please note, that I do allow any of my students to respond to requests posted here. It's an open forum. However, unless you see the Access Veteran badge next to their name (shown at right), then I do not personally recommend them. My Access Veterans are long-time students of mine who I know have completed most, if not all, of my Developer lessons and really know what they're doing when it comes to Microsoft Access.

Help needed with a search box Upload Images   Link

Hi, I'm just learning Access and I have one major obstacle that I can't figure out how to solve. I'm hoping a more advanced developer can help. I have one table with client names and information. I have another table with referrals.  Each client can have multiple referrals.  I'm trying to build a search box where I can search to see if a client already exists and if they do, add the new referral.  If they are not found in the search, it means I need to add a new client.  I've tried to do this with having the client lookup in the top of the form and the referral information in a subform. If I use a combo box, it wants me to choose someone and doesn't like if I don't make a choice. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thank you.

You can do this with a text box and an after update event. It's going to take some VBA coding. The text box searching is covered in Access Dev 8 (it's search as you type with key press but can be used on after update) you would just need to add in a DLOOKUP in the afterupdate event, if it returns null then some code to open up your new client form. If you're just beginning this is probably out of your current scope of understanding. I'd suggest just keep going with the lessons and learning, if it's that urgent me or some of the other devs on here do consults for hire, but it's going to be more rewarding in the end if you kept learning.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for your speedy response. I'm glad this is something that can be programmed. You are right that it's out of the scope of my present learning. I do plan to continue classes so that I can manage and make changes to the database. I am interested in learning more about your fee for service. I'm a social worker and am trying to learn this so that I can better serve and understand the client need and referral trends. So, I am trying to learn and build this on top of a 50-60 hr week.

No problem, I would suggest reading these two pages first for some context.

If you want to e-mail me your database my e-mail is
I like to see it first in case there is more problems I'll have to work through but I could give you my prices then.

If you send it, make sure to zip it first.
