Intro In lesson 327, you will learn how to create a packing slip, process product returns, put items back in stock, handle manual shipments, and track shipments online in Microsoft Access. I will show you how to specify the shipping carrier and tracking number, and how to launch your web browser directly from Access to view tracking information. We will also cover working with shipments for items not in your product table. This lesson uses Microsoft Access 2003, but the material applies to earlier versions as well.
Transcript Welcome to Microsoft Access 327 brought to you by accesslearningzone.com. I am your instructor, Richard Rost.

In this lesson, we are going to create a packing slip, process returns, put items back in stock, learn how to ship items that are not necessarily in your product table, how to do a manual shipment, and I will teach you how to track shipments on the web by specifying the carrier and a tracking number. You will also learn how to launch your web browser automatically from inside Access to go right to the UPS tracking site, for example, with the shipping number. This is a great time saver and a really useful tip.

This class follows Access 320 through 326. In this class, I will be working with Microsoft Access 2003. However, most of the material should be backward compatible with all previous versions of Access back to about Access 2000.

I strongly recommend you sit back and relax, watch the lesson one time through, then watch it a second time following along with the examples, and build the database that I build in class. Do not try to apply what you learn immediately to whatever other databases you might be working on.

The database files for this class can be found online at accesslearningzone.com/students. You will find a list of all the sample database files there. Again, it is strongly recommended that you build the databases in class that I am building.

If you have any questions about the material covered in today's class, please feel free to post a note in the student interaction forums. You will see the student interaction forums next to the video window if you are watching this class on our website or using our video player software and you are connected to the internet. You should see the student interaction forums pop up right next to the video player.

If you have any other Access questions, please visit the forums on the website at accesslearningzone.com/forums. We have brand new interactive forums. As of October 2008, I created all brand new forums. You can log on, check them out, and chat with me, other students, and other Access experts.

Of course, I cannot stress enough: do the examples yourself. You will benefit the most by building the databases that I build in class.

Summary Today's video from Access Learning Zone is Microsoft Access 327. In this lesson, I focus on several important features for managing orders and shipping in Access. We work together to create a packing slip and go through the process of handling returns, including putting items back into stock. I cover different scenarios, such as shipping products that might not be found in your product table and how to process a manual shipment.

Another key topic in this lesson is tracking shipments online. I show you how to record both the carrier and tracking number for your shipments. Beyond that, I demonstrate how to have Access automatically launch your web browser and take you straight to the carrier's tracking site, like UPS, with the right tracking number already entered. This is a valuable shortcut that can save you time.

This course continues where Access 320 through 326 left off. I use Microsoft Access 2003 for my demonstrations, but the techniques and concepts should work with earlier versions, going back to Access 2000.

My advice is to watch the entire lesson the first time without trying to follow along. This way, you can get an overview of the material. Then, watch it a second time while following along and building the database as I do in class. Avoid trying to apply what you learn directly to other databases right away.

You can find all the database files used in this class on the Access Learning Zone website under the student section. There you will see a complete list of all sample database files for your use. Once again, I highly recommend building the example databases exactly as demonstrated in these lessons.

If any questions come up while you are working through the class, post them in the student interaction forums. These forums are available next to the video window on our site or in our video player software, provided you are connected to the internet. You will see the forums right next to the video player, making it easy to interact with me and other students as you work through the material.

For any other Access questions that might not be covered in this lesson, visit the general forums on the Access Learning Zone website. As of October 2008, we have upgraded to new interactive forums where you can communicate and share knowledge with me, fellow students, and Access experts.

I cannot overstate the value of going through the examples on your own. Building the databases step by step with me in class is the best way to master the material.

You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
