Excel 2007 Copy & Paste Link
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on Facebook Richard Rost on Twitter Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   11 years ago

Q: I used to be able to copy and paste links between two spreadsheets in Excel. I would open up one file, select a range, and then Edit > Copy > Paste Link in the second file and Excel would make a link between them. This was also great in the middle of a function (like VLOOKUP) to be able to copy ranges. Now, this doesn't seem to work in Excel 2007. What can I do? >Kyle

A: Kyle, this feature still works, but Microsoft changed the implementation a little. If you just open two Excel workbooks you can't easily copy and paste links between them anymore. Why? I don't know.

You have to open the workbooks in the same "workspace" now. Here's how to do it: create your two files and save them.

Now, with FILE1 open, click on Office > Open and open up FILE2 so they're both in the same workspace (instance of Excel). Now click on View > Arrange All to get them both on the screen at the same time (I prefer Vertical, that's just me).

Now you'll find you can copy and paste links and ranges (even your VLOOKUP trick) between the two windows.

I know… confusing. It threw me for a loop too the first time.

No, the other sheet is not protected. The excel version is 2007

Reply from Alex Hedley:

If you run in Safe Mode does it work.
Just use the /safe switch when opening Excel

I cannot paste link graph from one excel work sheet to another within the same work book. While clicking the paste special, the paste link is greyed. Can anyone help unravel this?

I had the same problem until I noticed that I had accidently selected multiple sheets in the source workbook. When I changed to select only 1 sheet in both source and destination the problem was solved.

I found out that removing the "formatting as table" from the source sheet allowed the past link to proceed....

Clyde, I'm not sure what to tell you. I just tested it AGAIN and it worked perfectly fine for me. I don't know what the problem might be on your system. Make sure you have the latest service packs installed. Make sure File1 and File2 are both SAVED before you try pasting a link. Read More...
