You know that passage in the Bible that says, "and the meek shall inherit the Earth?" Always wondered if that was mistranslated. Perhaps it actually says, "and the geek shall inherit the Earth."
Well, since Microsoft is going to be giving the Ban Hammer to Classic Outlook sometime in the next couple years, and I personally rely on Outlook to RECEIVE mail into my Access database, I spent the whole day today coming up with a solution to receive email directly from Gmail using IMAP.
It's a huge pain in the behind, but I figured out how to get it working.
My questions to all of you are:
- How many of you rely on using your Access database to RECEIVE email?
- Would you be interested if I made this an addendum to the Email Seminar?
It will involve multiple steps to get it set up and configured. Once that's done, and you successfully get an "authentication token" then it's pretty straightforward from that point on to use.
If you need to push this out to multiple end-users, that will be a bit of a challenge because they'll have to also get their own auth tokens by logging on to their Gmail accounts with their browser.
Still working on making it pretty... but before I do, I'd like to know who's interested. No sense in going crazy if it's just for myself. I've got it working for me. :)
My prompt to GPT for that rather silly image was: "I need a picture representing Microsoft giving the boot to classic Outlook and Gmail stepping in to save the day."
I use Outlook right now to read emails into my database. It's a super time saver because I can display them in a form and the customer's account is automatically pulled up right next to their email. Huge time saver. But with the future of Outlook unknown, another solution will be needed. Since I use Gmail a lot, it's the logical choice. In fact, Outlook is just reading my Gmail account. Just skipping the middleman.
