Personal Code Vault

I need to start saving some notes for code in my own code vault. What is the best way to do this?  I was thinking of several options. In an excel spreadsheet or Word document. Or create a database and store in a table or in different modules. If in a table using the notes field also have a keyword field and use Richards’s search box 2 to look for certain items.

Um Um Um .... your working with one with oh the name escapes me... Accessing Accessing.  If I had had a Database.  All joking aside I have a database that I store some of the Code vault stuff  using long Text to store the sample code.  Short text for short notes.

I have LOTS of comments in my code, and documentation for the procedures. I guess I could add keywords, but then I would have to remember the keyword to find it. Kind of like trying to remember a meaningful word in the description I already have.

First step keep a copy of all your dbs inVCS / GitHub
If you then want to document them you could either add markdown files to those repos and write whatever you need.
Or you could build a docfx

On a more serious note, for decades I've organized my code into "modules" that contain functions/subs/etc. I have "modules" for strings, dates and numbers, so it's easier to find what I'm looking for. I also have utilities for a developer (for example, displaying and array or all the TempVars). Then there are utilities for a particular application module (for example, universal, payroll, HR) that are likewise separated. In Access (compared to other older systems where they were in different "files") it's easy to organize the code into what Access calls Modules. These are the "code vault". If I need something new, Richard's got that covered.

After I've created some procedure, for say a form, if it could be used elsewhere, the first chance I get I make it a callable procedure or function with greater usability and move it to the appropriate "helper" module.

Hi Chris, I used Access to create a way to organize, store and retrieve code etc. and at the same time I used many of the tips etc that Rick showed us, while I built it. . ie. I open any type of document whether it is codeclip or Onenote with more stuff, pictures etc. Also I built a very good search routine to find things. I can also play a video from Access.  HTH John

Hi Chris, I use Access to organize, store and retrieve sign ins, notes, code etc.

Two tables (1 to many) both have a long text notes field. DB references set.

Richard’s search as you type box (named Find) functions on both laptops:
Windows 10, 32 bit, Access 2000; Windows 11, 64 bit, Access 2024.

Not sure if I can upload here (with sample records).

You can't upload files here.
But you could stick it on GitHub or other code sharing site and share the link.
