Today's entry is a little different. It's Saturday, so I'm breaking from the usual logical fallacy theme to talk about something far more important - my new office chair.
For the past ten years, I've been riding the same old $50 chair I bought from OfficeMax. It was nothing fancy, just a basic, no-frills task chair. But it was comfortable, reliable, and did its job. Until it didn't. Over time, the pneumatic lift started to wear out. The seal would give way, and every couple of hours my not-so-lightweight frame would slowly sink toward the floor. I'd have to reach under, pull the lever, and launch myself back up again. Rinse and repeat. It was time.
Now, over the years I've tried a lot of office chairs - some cheap, some ridiculously expensive. I even splurged once on a $1,000 ergonomic monstrosity with enough knobs and levers to pilot a shuttlecraft*. One model had a vibrating backrest. Another promised "dynamic lumbar engagement." But none of them ever beat my original cheap chair for simple day-to-day comfort. I'd always drag the old one back in.
So this time, I thought, why not just get something as close as possible to the original? A no-nonsense, sturdy, comfortable chair that doesn't try to solve problems I don't have. Unfortunately, OfficeMax is long gone, and Office Depot didn't have anything close. So I took a gamble and turned to Amazon.
Now, I've always been skeptical of Amazon Basics products. I know how that game works - they identify top-selling items, clone them through white-label manufacturers, and undercut the original. The quality? Meh. I've bought a few of their products before and usually regretted it. But I figured: worst case, I send it back. As a Prime member, it'll cost me $1. Let's try.
I'm glad to report I was wrong.
The Amazon Basics chair I picked up turned out to be the most comfortable chair I've ever owned. It's simple, sturdy, and surprisingly well-built. The seat is nice and wide (which matters more than it used to), and the back support is just right. It's essentially the spiritual successor to my old chair - familiar in all the right ways, with a few minor upgrades that actually help. For about a hundred bucks, it's a steal. And adjusting for inflation, it's probably the same price I paid for the original ten years ago.
So yes, my opinion of Amazon Basics has shifted. At least for chairs.
Below is a picture of the new Captain's Chair. And if you're in the market for something similar, here's a link to the exact one I bought. Yes, it's an Amazon affiliate link. No, I'm not trying to make 13 cents in commission. I only write about products when I'm either thrilled or furious - and today, I'm thrilled.
Even Captain Picard needed the right chair before he could confidently say, "Engage." Turns out, the right seat makes all the difference.
* I spent over $1,000 on an X-Chair. It was nice, but just didn't fit my frame properly. So now it sits in the garage for when I do projects. And of course, I waited just a little too long to try to send it back. I was trying to like it. Never really did. And this isn't saying anything negative about X-Chair. It's a nice chair. Just not perfect for me.
P.S. I did make one minor adjustment. I've always preferred soft rubber caster wheels for my office chair instead of the hard plastic ones they usually come with. I bought these for my original chair and just swapped them out. Love the feel, and they're easier on your floor - don't leave black scuff marks.
Okay, now this isn't funny. I asked ChatGPT to make a picture of me sitting in the captain's chair with my finger up like Picard does when he says "Engage!" - and this is what it came up with...
Alex yeah, I believe that was one of the models I was considering before I bought the X-Chair. It looks cool, but I'm telling you, this new chair that I got is perfectly comfortable.

Richard, I hope you don't take offense. In your original post, you made reference to the problems most of us face with advancing age and weight (they both increase). So I had to laugh to myself when you said: "And adjusting for inflation, it's probably the same price I paid for the original ten years ago." I knew you were referring to economics, but with your previous references, I immediately thought of my own "adjustment for inflation", or my own expanding "seat cushion"! Thanks for the unintentional laugh and most importantly, for your wonderful teaching style and wealth of knowledge.
Glad you found one that works for you and even better at a reasonable price.

Over the last 5 years, when I started to do a lot of work from home (starting with Covid), I must have gone through 7-8 chairs. I finally stumbled upon the comfortable chair I'm sitting on. Again, the chair's ability to handle my weight and the width of my seat was important.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with this thing. I took it out of the box and I'm like, "oh, it's a little wider than I thought" and that's fantastic because I like to sit with my legs wide. Half the time, I put my feet up on a little box and so I'm almost sitting cross-legged but in a chair. It's weird but that's what I do. The other half the time, I put my feet on the chair legs. So it's got plenty of room for me to man-spread in my chair, lol.
Paul yeah... tell me about it. I need all the cushion I can get. LOL.

I've had my Herman Miller for almost thirty years.
Someday I'll have to add a little hydraulic fluid for it to "stay up" for more than a few days.

The plant I used to work for routinely bought 24/7 chairs for the control operators. The absolute most comfortable was an all mesh chair, similar to this. The best part of the mesh chair was the ability to stay cool and dry clean even if the previous occupant had been sweaty. Living in Florida and having a pool, I could see a benefit there.
I add those casters to any office chair that I buy. Be careful with them. My floor at work is unlevel and sometimes my chair "wanders off" when I stand up.

Of the 7-8 chairs I have tried over the last few years, I have tried several all-mesh chairs, but none of them had a seat that was wide enough for my ample derriere.
Yeah, that really expensive X-Chair was mesh. Didn't care for it. I like padding. Living in Florida, I always keep the AC cranked in my office. Heat is for outside.
Sami, I'm with ya, brother. :)

Sad, but funny.

As a child of the environmentally conscious 60s, I have to point out that most office chair companies will sell you a replacement cylinder for the hydraulic lift. Probably wasn’t true for your old model Richard. Agree that a good chair is a good thing.
Michael I thought about that, but the old chair really was due for a complete replacement. It's like sleeping on a mattress well past its expiration date. Certain spots just don't fluff back up again. :(

I was moments away from buying this chair.… until I saw how many people in the Amazon reviews keep talking about it being for "Big and Tall" persons. I may be tall at 6'0" but would not consider myself big. Are all those posts correct in driving me away from this chair.. or am I overthinking it?
You're definitely overthinking it. I love this chair. It's fine. I'm 6'0". I weigh 315 pounds right now, but it's amply wide for my bottom. It's super comfortable. I love it. I can sit kind of cross-legged on it. I can put my feet up on my little box I got here. I think it's the most comfortable chair I've had in a long, long time if not ever.

OK, I'm going for it.. in fact I have placed the order just minutes ago. I noted that it was "used" in the Amazon Resale shop and there was only 1 left... so I made the move. I too am 6'0" but only 200# - but I do like to sit Indian style, so this may work out just fine. And if it does not.. Amazon Prime Returns are my friend.
