Selecting Characters Out of a Name
Andrea Buckridge

11 months ago
I have done this before, but I haven't been able to get online in a long while and I can't recall how to set this up.  For example, I want to use the name "Andrea Buckridge". I want the database to remove spaces, then select the first 3 of the first name and the last 3 of the last name and put them together in another field. Please forgive for my long absence. I must confess that my presence will not be consistent until I can find a way to have internet on my truck.

Well, the first thing you're going to have to do is identify where that space is. You can use the InStr function like Alex pointed out there. Once you have that, then you can figure out what the left and right sides of that string are. And once you have that, you could take the left 3 characters of each string. Try to figure this out yourself. You can do this all in a query. If you can't figure it out, let me know. This might make a good video. But definitely watch all of those videos that Alex and Kevin point you to first.

As far as internet goes in your truck, do you have a cell phone? Can your cell phone hotspot? If so, there's internet in your truck. I use it a lot when I'm traveling because I don't trust hotel Wi-Fi.

Thank you all so much!

I finally found where I had used this before.

Private Sub CompanyName_AfterUpdate()

    Dim S As String, X As Long

    For X = 1 To Len(CompanyName)
        S = Mid(CompanyName, X, 1)
        If S <> " " Then CompanyNameLU1 = CompanyNameLU1 & S
        CompanyNameLU1 = FilterCharacters(CompanyNameLU1, "0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz")
        CompanyNameLU2 = Left(CompanyNameLU1, 3) & "" & Right(CompanyNameLU1, 3)

    Next

End Sub
