Combo Boxes

If I already have existing records as a result of typing in the values that I wanted, but then want to go back and recreate those combo boxes the right way (creating a new table w/those values and an editable form)...will I lose the existing data in all my records?  If so, how could I do it the new way w/o losing the existing data?

1. Save a copy of your database in case you mess up!

2. Add the Table you're going to use for your combo box entries
3. Add the Values to this (Combo) Table exactly how you have them in your existing table
4. Add the New Field as a Number or Integer in the existing table (this will be your foreign key)

5. Now make an Update Query Linking your existing Table with the (Combo) Table linking them with the Text values.  Set the New Field in your existing table to update to the Primary Key field from your new (Combo) Table.  Click on 'View' first and make sure it looks right.  When you have these fields matched up correctly, then run the query.  This will put all the Foreign Keys into your existing table.

5. Now I would run a query looking at Null Values to make sure you didn't miss any.

6. Once you have all the Foreign Keys populated with the correct values, you can delete the field you will no longer be using. (or leave it for a while until you're 100% sure it's no longer needed.

7. You will need to do this for each Table that has the old text fields.

For each Combo Box... I would make note of the properties and look at the VBA for each event.  (Copy the VBA into notepad for each event)

You will need to update all the combo boxes on each form for this field.  I would recommend deleting the combo box and build a new one so you don't run into problems with data properties not being set correctly.

Once you have the new Combo Boxes, copy the VBA Events back into the form VBA and set the other properties the way you want them... (font, text size, colors, etc)

That should be it.
