Command Button to Duplicate Parent Child Record
Ariana Sword

Reuploaded cause I have accidentally posted it at the wrong place RIP.
Hello it's me again.

So I have this equipment database where I would like a button that duplicates the current form and subform since we have 30 sets of the same equipment with their dongles and such that require recording. However, when using the control button from form design, I see that the parent form is duplicated but not the subform. I have a feeling that macros are involved in this but I only have completed my lessons up to access expert 3. Any help is appreciated... (don't tell me to bulk buy Mr Rost's lessons or say RTFM cause I'm just a poor student ;-;)

TLDR: Need help finding a way to duplicate both the subform and form's data (different IDs tho)

We have like 30 of these body harnesses that have 7 parts.. typing them all one by one is a waste of time. This isn't the only equipment type that is abundant with multiple parts too I feel like crying lowkey... /><\

We have 30 of these equipment type with 7 components that require recording. This isn't the only equipment type that has multiple copies since the database is for an oil and gas pipeline corrosion testing company. huhuhu I feel like crying cause I'm just an intern /><\

Hi Ariana, Making 30 copies of a form is not the answer. We may be able to help you once we understand exactly what you are trying to do or make happen. Would it be possible to see an example of some data (NOT ACTUAL COMPANY DATA) that would allow programmers to understand the issue. Please check with the Boss first! HTH John

Ariana This would be an example of the problem I am facing for one of the equipment. We have 30 of these body harnesses, and they all have the same components. Honestly i have a lot of other equipment, separated by category and types. Honestly I think I can handle those as long as they don't have repetitive kids like the example above

Ariana this would be an equipment summary, aka what would be a report. any changes to the equipment location etc are recorded in the remarks section

Hi Ariana, Is this a database you built or one that the company already built? I am going to try to replicate it unless you want to send me a copy so I can really take a detailed look at it. Provided you have company approval, if you can send it I will give you a URL to a site.  Let me know   John

I think what you're wanting is to duplicate records... not the Form and Sub-form.

As for the duplicate equipment, each safety harness should have a serial number or something to distinguish it from other harnesses.  (not just the snap ring)  If it doesn't have one, you should make one and put that in your database.  I would also keep track of when inspections are performed on the harnesses (for legal purposes).  They should be inspected before/after each use.

As for copying the records... you can open the query, select the records, then copy and paste as many as you want.  (I would copy the first, then remove the serial numbers, then copy and paste the rest)  This will only work if you have all your primary and foreign keys setup the way Rick teaches in his lessons.

Hope this helps,

-Raymond

Make a table to list the sub components of each type of equipment then link it to equipment type table

Raymond Hi Raymond, sorry for the late reply, I have been sick.

Yeah, there should be seril numbers for every components, the data given to me is relatively incomplete haha. I'm also planning to learn how to create notifications reminding users that certain equipments require calibration.

As for copying the records, I have thought about ctrl+C & v from query as well but I won't be handling it long term. my company wanted a more user friendly approach to inventory handling besides their excel sheet (where the data comes from) so I would like for the common user to mostly access forms + reports.
