New Chat String for Lesson 10
Ken Wykoff

Hi Guys, I decided to start a new chat string as the other one was getting too long and hard to follow. I finally deleted the entire ProductTopF and created it again from scratch. In doing this, I finally located the spot where the ProductList Window went blank. It happened the moment I changed the last step from ProductVendorUpdatingQ to ProductT, as shown how to do in the video. I am totally lost as to why that would work in the lesson view and not for my own project, but I found the cause at least. Once I changed it back to ProductVendorUpdatingQ, the window reappeared. Now the only thing that will now work even following the instruction properly, the Ascending button does not change anything. I am at the last step now in this lesson. I need to get corrected, or I cannot progress to creating the report part that follows. I have attached a couple more screenshots to look at and maybe you can see what I can't. Sorry to bother you all with this ongoing lesson.

Ascending isn't working because you have descending hard coded.

Kevin, the video showed how to set the default values as "Descending"  Is that what you mean when you say hard coded? Not sure why he would put that in the video if that is what is going to stop it from working. But let me see what happens when I remove that from the default settings.

ORDER BY UnitPrice DESC

This is what I mean by hard coded.

Kevin I guess I'm not understanding why he would place that in the instructions of the video and then it not work? As the video shows this being saved and him running it, it shows it works.

I will remove all what you have the red squares around and see if it will then work for me. Thanks, Kevin!

I removed both and now it only shows ascending. This is very discouraging

Alex Thank you, but even after removing both red outlined boxes that Kevin showed me, it still doesn't work. I am just curious as to how Richard got all that to work, and I can't get it to work after doing everything that he did on the video and in the handbook.

Swap ProductList.RowSource = ... to become a string instead:
Dim strSQL = ...
Then
ProductList RowSource = strSQL
Which means you can either
MsgBox strSQL
Debug.Print strSQL
Status strSQL
So you can see what the full SQL is produced by your choices.

Also what do you believe removing the first red box Kevin drew will do?

Also see pg 29 of 64 of the Handbook.

Ok, I finally figured it out on what you were all meaning for me to do. I had to remove the UnitPrice DESC from the order by, and after watching a fourth time, I placed it in the line next to that " & SortStr & ";" and it now all works. Sorry for all the back-and-forth things, but it does take a bit of time for me to catch things, too, sometimes. Hopefully, I will be able to finish the course without asking more questions from you all. Thanks for your patience and all your guidance.

Ask as many questions as you'd like :-)

I forgot to mention that I left the SQL as ProductVendorUpdatingQ instead of ProductT, because I wanted to see the columns for Profit and New Price.

Never be afraid to ask we all pick things up at different speeds. Sometimes, it's those of us trying to help that just need to slow down and work at your pace. You're doing fine. Very happy you figured out your pain points on this one :) And, as for changing the source, you're allowed to do that! One of the things Richard says many, many, many times in his courses, "They're your Legos, put them together how you like..."
