Recycle Autonumbers

Hi Richard!

I made a database for a lawyer friend who incorporates companies in different countries for his clients.

Question 1: On the serviceT we list all the services. Many times he deleted records because he decided he did not want to offer some services. But now there are gaps in Autonumbers, and he wants to recycle deleted Autonumbers. Is it possible to recycle deleted Autonumbers (without any record) and re-use them? (Eg: Autonumbers are 1,2,3,4,8,9,12,13 and he wants to reuse 5,6,7,10,11) I know its not neccessary, but curious to know if possible?

Question 2: When he makes an Invoice, he wants to enter a different Tax/VAT depending on the country. I followed your expert series lessons on using yes/no box, and the VAT percentage in a Query. But this method only allows for one VAT percentage. Is there a way to achieve this? Maybe instead of a yes/no box, to put in a combo box and he chooses the VAT percentage (BVI 20%, Samoa 15& etc)?

Question # 1: Trying to recycle autonumbers gets messy because when you use the technique in this vidoe, it resets the pointer to be the next # so you will eventually run into conflicts. That's why AutoNumbers Are NOT For You. Customer Codes shows how to generate a separate # system.

Question # 2: Access Expert 9 shows using multiple sales tax.

What Donald said is 100% accurate, and I stand behind that. The only time you'd ever need to restore an autonumber is if you accidentally deleted a record and you've got tons of child records that depend on it. You can sneak an autonumber back in the table using an update query, but I don't recommend it.
