Subform Not Refreshing
Kim Boren

Hello,
I am building my fitness database and have reached "Fitness 13". I have created my subform and my meal form. I have created the query that goes with it. My problem is that my subform does not change when my meal form changes description. So I missed something. I have been working on it for a few days and could use some help to point me in the right direction.
Thank you,
Kim

If your subform isn't updating when you change the meal description in your main meal form, it's usually a sign that the data connection between the parent form (meals) and the subform (meal details) isn't set up quite right. In this setup, the subform should only show the meal details for whatever meal is currently selected in the main form. Access does this by linking the parent and child fields, usually using something like MealID.

Here are a couple of things to check. First, make sure your subform control (the box the subform sits in on your parent form, not the form itself) has the Link Master Fields and Link Child Fields properties set correctly. They should both use the MealID field, which ties the records together. You can check this by clicking on the subform control, opening the data properties, and making sure those properties are filled in with MealID (or whatever your unique key is called).

If those fields are blank or incorrect, fill them in and then test your form. When you move to a different meal in the main form, the details in the subform should update to match.

If you've already done this and it's still not working, double-check that the record source for your subform is the correct query (usually the meal details query that includes MealID as a field), and that MealID is available in your query's output.

Let me know what you find. If it's still not behaving, a screen shot or two of your main form in design view (with the subform selected and the property sheet open) can help spot any sneaky settings. This is one of those little Access gotchas that trips up a lot of people.

Richard,
Thank you very much for your help. I did not have the parent child relationship setup. I have done that now and it works great.
