Searchability is seeking a Senior Software Developer for an unnamed client in Chesterfield, UK. This permanent, hybrid position pays GBP 55,000 to 65,000 annually and requires two to three days per week on-site. The company's operational system uses a Microsoft Access front end with SQL Server behind it.

What the role entails:

You'll maintain and extend Access/VBA applications, improve T-SQL queries, views, and stored procedures, and help plan the system's future. Documentation, testing, and source control also matter. Commercial experience with Access, VBA, SQL Server, and T-SQL is required; C#/.NET or Python would be an advantage.

About Searchability:

Searchability is the recruitment agency, not the end employer. Its client is described as an established business with an in-house development team, but its name and industry aren't disclosed.

Rick's take:

This is a strong example of Access doing real work as the front end for a larger database. Developer-level Access skills are relevant, but you'll also need substantial SQL Server experience. The emphasis is on understanding and improving an existing application. Students who enjoy maintaining complex VBA systems and working with T-SQL should take a look.
