Hi Richard, after being overwhelmed by sub-par Access learning materials online (either they would be too basic for what I need, or would explain complicated material assuming I had background knowledge which I do not have) I was excited to find one of your developer videos on YouTube and decided to spring for your paid courses here. I am familiar with using Access to enter data, but creating a new database has been a challenge for me.
I purchased some of your beginner courses and while most of it was review for me, I did learn some useful new material. Looking ahead at subsequent courses, it seems like the skills I need to learn to build my database are a mixture of different levels (beginner, advanced, expert, and developer). I can't afford to buy every course, and a lot of the material seems irrelevant to my needs (I am a biologist working on organizing field data from thousands of animals encountered over several decades, so the business-oriented stuff is not needed). However, I am worried that if I purchase only the courses I need, it will build off of material/databases from previous courses that I haven't purchased and not be understandable to me.
Is this a common issue with students? Will the courses still be understandable if I skip around?
Hi Danielle. You're not alone. While I try to make it so that my courses stand alone, there's really no way around cumulative instruction. For example, if you go sit in a college Math 301 course to learn Calculus and you haven't been to 101 and don't know basic arithmetic, you're going to have a rough time. That being said, I would recommend picking up the course you think you need and if you're lost, go back one lesson. Usually the topics are grouped together so things like "action queries" are all covered right around each other.
I do strongly recommend taking the lessons in order to get the most out of them, but if budget is a concern, I do have a membership option available where you get a new lesson every week (or whatever interval you like) at a 50% discount: Learning Connection.
