Filtering continuous subforms
Erik Ferguson

I'm trying to create a subform where each row has several cascading combo box filters to limit the number of results in primary combo box. For example, manufacturer, model, and assembly would be used to filter the list of part numbers in another combo box.

It appears all the rows in a continuous form by default share the same filter. Also, if I use an unbound combo box it changes in every row.

I have seen suggestions online to place a text box over a combo box and use VBA code at the event level to filter the record source. Another suggestion is to have a message box pop up on click to filter the individual row.

Is there a lesson on this? If not it would make a great lesson. This seems to be a very common workflow.

I know what you're saying, but no, that's just not possible. ALL combo boxes with the same name on the same form will share the same rowsource. You could put one in the form header or footer but it will filter ALL of the rows.

I ended up adding a combobox in the header of the subform as a workaround. The combobox in the header controls the subform filter command. It required some VBA. I really think this would a good youtube tip video.

I wrote up a Tip a few years ago: Continuous Form - Dependent Combo, is this what you were after?

Yes that is what I was looking for. I tried to search and missed that Tip.

Thank you.

Nice trick, Alex. See, even I haven't seen all the stuff he's posted in the Tips section.
