Automate Alerts

Is there a way to create an automated alert system that sends and email to a list of users if a change is made on a specific record?  Likewise, I'd like to implement a feature that sends a daily summary of all changes to key leaders.  Additionally I'd like to implement a feature that allows somebody to follow a specific record.

I think the easiest way to do that would be to add a hidden checkbox, if anything is changed in the record mark the checkbox true, and then run something on close to do the alerts. If you want to send a daily summary, add a "log" with those on close events to store in a table so you can send them all out together.

What do you mean by "follow" a specific record? I think having notifications on changes with the checkbox would be the same thing?

Adam,

The notification on changes would go to a specific list of people.

The "Follow" would allow another user to follow a specific record.

OK so use the checkbox, make it send to the specific list of people, either hard programmed or add a true/false field to their customer/employee table and use that to know who to send notifications to.

For "follow" you could make a junction table, assign certain users to certain records, and if changes are made, notify them as well using the same checkbox and on close event.

Yeah, you'd need some way of marking a record as "important." Like Adam says, a y/n value would work fine. Then in the AfterUpdate event for that record, send out your emails. The daily summary is also possible. It's got to run from somewhere though. I'd recommend setting up one workstation as "the server" and put an event on the main menu so when it is opened, it runs that daily event. Or keep it running 24/7. Your call.
