Split Database
Mark Desens

Hi I finally got why one of the forms didnt want to auto insert a name from login  form. I just simply made a new one, now it works. New question, Im watching the security seminar video and we need 3 levels so that video helps out greatly. Question, could you finish everything before splitting the database? And another question, what video shows how to split the database and how do you add to it after more people join our organization. Thanks.

Your very unlikely to finish everything before splitting the database (even if you think you have finished), especially if this is your first one. You will probably forget something or want to add something later, thats the great thing about access, you can always keep changing it to meet your needs.

You will still be able to make changes. If you need to add users later you just open the table/form (if youve made one) and add them. If you need to create a whole new table for something, you just open the back end and create the table, then go to the front end and link the table to it. Im pretty sure splitting the database is shown in that seminar as well. Im not at a pc so i cant look at the moment. The only other thing you need to be aware of is if you make any changes to the front end, it only affects your copy, you need to go around and replace everyones front end if you want them to have the updates.

Hi Adam and thanks for the info and your right. Both you and Athena say the same thing, as we keep putting stuff together she thinks about something else that we may want to add. Splitting it is later and running it on multiple computers is later. For now I am only taking it step at a time learning as I go. It's up to her to bring someone in to take a look at it and help with it. Thanks Adam for the help and advice.

Mark - check out (1373}
There is also seminar linked on that page with the video.

I agree with Adam.  The db I'm working with was developed in 1999.  I'm still adding and tweaking it today. (I'm not the original developer) Some of the things they did are pretty amazing it even worked!  LOL

Once you have your tables 'pretty' stable - Split it. If you are still making lots of table changes keep it as one.
If you are making changes to forms and reports but not the underlying data tables - Take the plunge.

Richard also produced a template to help you out with deploying changes to your front end when you get to that point.
