Multi User Database

What videos, in which order would be best to watch, if I wanted to start preparing my database for use in multi user scenario on a local network or maybe cloud based. Is there a series? Would like to watch a few different ways to do this!

Hi Caroline. I cover this in detail in my Access Expert 21 class, which I see you're almost up to. I'm actually going to be covering this in an upcoming TechHelp video too.

Fortunately Access is multi-user by it's very nature. All you have to do it Split the database, Encrypt the front-end, install the Runtime on each user's PC, and then distribute the front-end file to each user's PC. That's it. Not super hard to do.

Next, do you trust your users? Are you worried that they're going to see data they shouldn't see (credit card numbers, accounting into, etc.)? If this is a concern, watch my Security Seminar.

If you want to share the database in your office LAN (local-area-network) and you have a "server" where you can put a shared folder that everyone has access to, then you can share your database that way very easily. If you can give everyone a Z: drive, for example, that's mapped to your server folder, then you're all set. And I say "server" because it doesn't have to be an actual file/database server like Windows Server. I use a normal laptop running Windows 10 as my "server" PC.

If you want an easy way to distribute changes to your front-end file, I have an Access Updater utility. Saves you a lot of time having to run around to everyone's PCs to install an update.

Finally, if you have remote users and you want to share the database online, there are several options. See my Access Online page for details. Access Database Cloud is definitely the easiest solution.

This thread is now CLOSED. If you wish to comment, start a NEW discussion in Access Runtime.
