User wants to use a table
Deb

Hello,

I have a small database with 2 tables, One table containing the "Primary Key" values and the other containing the many records under the primary key (the foreign key table.)

My problem is I have a user who cannot master using a form and simply wont use the form, but insists on entering data in the foreign key table.

Is there a way to update the primary key when a new value is placed in the foreign key table  to keep referential integrity intact?

Thank you

For further reference here is the architecture of the database":

Primary table:
Primary Key - ID
Account - no duplicates (related to account in child table)

Child Table
Account - duplicates (related to account in primary table) Assigned to
Date
Rejected Notes

When my user updates the child table with a new value, I need the primary table to catch the new account and create the new record.

Richard Responds:

Before I can help you, I need to know what version of Access you're using. It makes a difference.

The short answer is: FORCE YOUR USER TO USE A FORM. Entering data directly into tables is NEVER a good idea, especially when joins are involved. Do what you have to do: lock him out of the database window and control what he has access to.

If you're using Access 2007 or 2010, you can set up a global system relationship between your two tables and then allow him to enter directly into your Primary table. He can then expand the table view to show related records from the Child table, but again I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS.

Tell him he NEEDS to use a form.
