Export OLE Object to File

Hello:  I have an Access database with an OLE field for pictures.  I want to remove the OLE pictures, since the database is huge.  Can I convert that OLE filed to a path so that it is not stored within the database. For example, I want to use the method of showing the photo from a path, such as C:\documents\images, but I no longer have the original images to use.

I don't want to purge them and the "Purge Image Gallery" is about "images" and not OLE objects, from what I watched.

But thank you for your reply.  I will keep looking.

Helen -
The Images and older but more in depth Imaging Seminar discuss the proper way to reconfigure your db to store the links to files properly. Not just images but also PDFs and Doc files, sound files - pretty much any external file would would need to "'store".

The Purge Image video tells you how to get the files removed and shrink your db.

The bigger concern for me at this point is that you said, "I no longer have the original images".
I don't know how many you are talking about but I don't recall ever seeing exporting out images from the db that were put in incorrectly initially.  Maybe Richard will have some input how to do that.
Be very careful and Backup, Backup, Backup before doing anything drastic.  Work with a copy until you are sure about the conversion.

Thank you for the information on the Imaging Seminar.  What I want to do, is to export the OLE pictures , in order to put the photos in a folder.  Then I want to have the photos visible in the database , on a report, using the path of the photo, by browsing to it.  But I have 9000 photos.  It's a big job that I have been putting off.  It's for an animal shelter that I volunteer for.  The database is huge and I should fix this, but I am looking for a quicker way rather than doing one by one.

I was afraid it was more that 10.  LOL
There is probably a way to export out the photos.  I just don't have experience doing so.  I put up the "Bat Signal" in my last post to Richard, so hopefully he or one of the others with more experience, can chime in to educate us both.

Thanks Scott.  I know it is a lot.  it's a database that I have been using for 16 years, so there are a lot of photos of animals that came through the shelter.

I spent a good hour this morning on the Google machine, and I tried a few different VBA solutions that people posted. None of them worked for me. I did find several references to a utility found HERE that people said works great. I haven't tested it, but I figured I'd share my findings. The newest version is at the top of the page. Again, I have not tried this, so use at your own risk, but it's the only solution I could find that other people said worked reliably.

Here's some code that looks good, but again, I haven't tested it: Extracting OLE

Hello Richard:  Thank you for those suggestions.  I already tried the first one, from Lebans,  and after updating it for a 64 bit system, I am getting this error message even though I did what it instructed.  (Thanks for the video on updating code for a 64 bit system! )     The second  error is " cannot find SSLGetContents.dll.  Please copy SSLGetContents.dll. to your Windows System 32 folder or into the same folder as this Access MDB."    So, I am at a standstill with this one.  As for the second one, it states "Other VBA code will be necessary to display the picture in the external file, which is beyond the scope of what I want to show here."  So, that won't work since after I export the OLE objects, I want to create a link as you have done in your Imaging Seminar, which I purchased.  I think I am going to purchase a software that I found on https://www.yohz.com/store.htm.  I tried the trial version and it works well.  I have to figure out how to create a link to that exported
