Change Password

I took the extended cut a step further storing the password in a table. On the password protected form I added a text link (label) so the user can change the password.

I built a form asking for the current password, the new password and a confirmation of the new password.

After some validation the password is changed with an UPDATE statement.

Nice
I combined the passwrod with the other video and beefed up the input of PW - I have it set to 8 characters with number capital letter and special caracter.  Now you gave me one more idea to try.  I like the change PW option... If you can do share.

I tried doing a password system but my end users were complaining. Not sure what about...

Dan I hope you also put in there the "you cannot re-use a previous password" LOL

^^Adam - at least not the last 20 passwords. LOL
Fun fact - our business account has that stipulation.

Scott it's one of the dumbest stipulations, what ends up happening is people go from password to password1 to password2 to password3 just incrementing a number on it or something small and then they forget their passwords all the time.

I understand the security reasoning but unless we're talking about my finances or something I think is worth that effort, it's silly. I don't' want to have to change my password every 60-90 days to view my dogs haircut schedule LOL.

Bitwarden FTW. Entirely free (tho they some highly advanced extras for a couple of notes) and works with almost anything. Only have to remember one super password for over 250 logins

Dan - Had to Google Bitwarden.
I've been looking at Lastpass.  The Bitwarden vs Lastpass in the "People Ask" section was interesting.
Now you just made my decision more difficult.

"While Bitwarden has a better free plan, an extension for more browsers, and can generate slightly longer passwords, LastPass is much better at all of the essentials, including importing, auto-saving, and auto-filling passwords."

I've been using bitwarden for about 2 years now. Never look back. When i went over to BW, i bit the silver bullet and changed all my passwords to auto generated ones so I've never needed to import or auto save. As for auto fill, it's works 99% of the time. There's1 maybe two websites in those two years I've come across where it didn't work but they were crummy anyway (local radio and such). On the off chance it doesn't work, you can just click the key icon to copy paste the password.

The only issue with any of these systems is logging in to services on an independent device like a smart TV or old Amazon kindle. If you can easily get to a web browser, you can use the online vault, for everything else there's an extension. Hell i have it installed on my steam deck!

You can also install to a usb stick and set up security keys and such. I never look back!

Last pass seems to be the go-to option that everyone talks about while BW is the better performing underdog in my opinion. Bad thing about something popular is that, as it grows, it becomes shittier and usually gets bought out by facebook or disney. Less chance of that happening to BW

Just had a look, didn't realise it was open source. Even better!

Dan can you have a shared password?
There are a couple of sites where i can't have an individual password to an account with my brother.  Family LLC banking.  But I don't need everything shared.

Yeah so, you can set up something called an organisation which is a group of people who share the same passwords, and collections which contain those passwords. With the free version, you can have up to 2 organisations and 2 collections.

For example, i have the premium which grants 6 premium accounts for '30 (About $36) per year. My Partner has one, and my parents have one as well. By default, we each have our own vault. I've created 1 collection for me and my parents and 1 collection for me and the partner. You can allocate passwords to organisations and collections as you please.

Thanks Dan - Good to know. I'm going to dive deeper into this.  I appreciate the insight.

In my old job I verified users with their IP addresses - no passwords required. With my web interface I did the same. It's easy to get user IPs on the web, using ASP.  With VBA, it's more involved.

The need for a tool to store gazillion passwords is a sign that this system is not helpful anymore; not to mention, password managers only help you remember them, but don't really enhance the underlying security.  If a password is stolen, it's game over for whatever it is protecting.  But with IP address (or better security like 2-factor), someone would have to be physically using your device to gain access.

Agree with Kevin, its a mess. I used a service a little while ago that used 3FA. It's getting ridiculous.

I just use "password" all the time. Nobody figures I'd be that stupid.
