Hi Richard, Trust you're well!

I'm interested in creating a messaging system between users on a database (like an internal whatsapp). Like whatsapp, I can send a message to another user, and when they log on to database, there's a flashing icon alerting them to a new message. Have you ever created something like this?

(There's an office policy restricting use of mobile phones during workhours, and we do not give personal numbers to clients, so I wanted a method to communicate between users who are in different offices/buildings).

Wish you merry x-mas and happy new year for 2023!

Regards,
JP

At face level this is pretty easy would just need to make a "contact" in the same way you make a contact table in all his videos, then the two of you could go back and forth with "contacts". You could make a checkbox that you could check for constantly if there are new messages to alert the other person. The only difficult part would be if you wanted to restrict it so only userA and userB can see this conversation, userC can't see it. Then you'd have to use some login credentials.

WhatsApp has a web version ( https://web.whatsapp.com/ ) and a desktop version ( https://www.whatsapp.com/download ).  So if your users still have access to PCs during work hours, they may use a web-based or Windows-based messaging app.  That would be better than having to make one yourself with Access.

And yes, Richard has done it because you're looking at it: this website is done on Access, with messages, notifications, and things of that nature.

Why not just use WinChat?

Do you not have chat features with your Email provider? If MS use Teams, if Gmail use Chat etc.

Many thanks everyone for the feedback!!

@Kevin: watched a few videos of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSS_w9RUPNY) and looks pretty cool to send messages/attachments! Will look into installing this.

@Adam: Thanks for explanation. We do use login credentials, so will try to create the internal messaging. Wish me luck!

@Alex: We do have the chat features you mentioned, but I'm nervous about using third party apps with the Database.

WISH EVERYONE MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

If you already have user logons setup in your database, then sending messages between users is just a matter of setting up a table to hold the messages, a form to send and receive, and some kind of notification service. Another one of my students asked me something along those lines recently. I've got it on my "To Do" list for a video, but most of the components are already available in other videos. :)
