Recovering Access 9597 data

Hello. First - I have benefited so much from Richard and you all. Can't thank you enough. Most all of my questions have been answered here in some manner.

The quick answer is: converting access 95/97 to Access 365 - use MDB Admin at sourceforge. problem solved.

The long answer, I had been dealing with a problem recovering data from an old Access 97 database. Microsoft website said convert it in Access 2007 - but you can't download 2007 from Microsoft and they don't support 2007 anymore. So I called tech support there - they said they'd get back to me. mmhmm.

I searched through 599cd.com again - perhaps I missed it here?

I also tried ODBC connections of all kinds. No luck. Just this message:

"cannot open a database created with a previous version of your application"

which I include here in case you are searching for this exact phrase.

So disappointed that Microsoft wouldn't develop a tool for this.

Anyhow - after looking through several programs that had promise - but where the quantity and style of ads on their pages made me very worried about downloading their potentially useful program, I came across this most excellent free program called MDB Admin at sourceforge.  After installing it, I could query all the old tables using SQL, export queries to excel and there's even have a tool for converting mdb -> accdb. I couldn't directly open the converted file, but I could connect to it with Access 365 and so, problem solved.

Hope this helps someone.

And if you have a better way of doing it (using VBA, say) please respond.

Thanks! (and particular thanks to Marciel Degasperi from Brazil (marcieldeg) for creating and distributing MDB Admin on sourceforge!)

Thanks for sharing Doug. I haven't done anything like that myself but my immediate approach would have been to set up an old virtual machine, install the old access 95/97 and export from there. Your way sounds much more efficient

The CDs for Access 97 and 2007 can be had cheaply on Ebay.  In fact, I've kept all the old, commercially-purchased installation discs from long ago, just so I have peace of mind.
