Display STRING for foreignKey
Gregory Clancey

I'm crawling slowly through the full roster of Access lessons. Currently in Expert 4, so my ignorance is childlike and undeniable. And so, I ask. . .
When a ComboBox's bound field is a foreign key, do we display this LNGinteger in the combo and place a TextBox to its right whose value is derived by a DLOOKUP using the Combo value as criterion? Do we assume that this is the best way to both enter AND display data on the same form. I there a TechHelp resource?

Just make the combo box with 2 columns. First column the ID number can be the control source, second column the actual word. Set the width of the column box rows to 0",1"

Yes, thanks, of course. This works well for inputting data, since the user can see the string value even as the integer is written to the bound table; however, when the form is opened to an existing record, will the string propagate in some Form field? Maybe so, but I suspect that some subroutine will be needed for this, using the DLOOKUP function. Maybe I'm wrong.

Gregory I think what you are talking about is covered in the DLookup video.
There is a way to reference a "column" in a combo as well but that is more for programming in VBA.  I'd keep progressing through the courses for now.  You will get there eventually.

Take a look at the Multi Field Combo as well. That may provide some additional help.

If you are interested the Customer Discount video discusses using the .column property for a Combo Box.

Thanks. I'm savvy enough from past experience to rig-up my workaround until I reach the Richard Rost pot of gold.
A humorous truth. I used to subscribe to an expensive resource called "TheExpertsExchange." When the wife saw the charge on the credit card what she made out was "theexpertSEXexCHANGE" and was certain I'd been to the dark web.
Of course, I charged THAT stuff on a different card (??).
