Building Management Lookup
Hussein

15 years ago
Many thanks for responding back Richard.

In brief, I am working on a building management project. The project consists of 3 Blocks (Block A, B & C), each Block consists of 4 Buildings (for Block A the buildings are A1, A2, A3 & A4) and each Building consists of 9 Floors (F1 through F9).

I have constructed 3 tables and called them BlocksTable, BuildingsTable and FloorsTable respectively.

Each table has 3 columns one for the Code, Description and Area (i.e. in the BlocksTable lock like the following:

BlockCode          BlockDescription     BlockArea
  A                         Block A                  32000
  B                         Block B                  52000
  C                         Block C                  64000

The other tables for the buildings and the floors are exactly the same.

all what I want to do is to construct a form whereby I can select in one field (through a ComboBox) the BlockCode and automatically I get the BlockDescription and the Block Area. and the same thing applies to the buildings and the floors.

As I said in my last message I have tried the DLookup but for some reason, it did not work out.
Appreciate your great effort in helping and supporting.

Reply from Richard Rost:

You should be able to solve this with a simple DLOOKUP and an AfterUpdate event, as shown in this tutorial: DLOOKUP.

It will look something like this:

Description = DLOOKUP("BlockDescription","BlocksTable","BlockCode='" & BlockField & "'")

Make a text box on your form called BlockField where you enter the value you're looking up (A, B, C, etc.) or even use a Combo Box for this (but make sure that's your BOUND column value). Then in the AfterUpdate event run the DLOOKUP statement, and make sure you have another text box called Description on your form to receive the value.
