logon to edit

I watched the user level security videos 1 2 and 3 but what I am looking for is slightly different.  I would like any user to be able to open and view the database and also be able to search records but they must logon in order to be able to edit the record.  is there an easy way to set this up?

How do you plan on doing this? So the database opens and does not require a login, then you make the user login from a menu option if they want to edit a record?

Hi Dan
You could do this multiple ways with some VBA. You could set all forms to be locked so no one can change things, then password protect the screens for users to edit. You would add a button on the form for the password to unlock the form.

Sami the way you described is exactly what I am looking for.......except I cannot use the method used in the disallow editing data video because I have a search field on that form and when you try to type the search criteria in it does not allow it

Hi Dan, the only way to do that is to hide the navigation pane and allow your users to interact only with your forms.  You cannot allow them to open your tables and queries directly -- only the developer should do that.  The navigation pane and its items have no password protection and cannot have it, unlike the database file itself.  If a user has access to the navigation pane, he can edit/delete table data and make design changes to tables and queries, even in an .accde file.  You may even have to hide and/or customize the ribbon too to restrict such user actions.

kevin, I will not grant access to the navigation pane or the ribbon when all is finished.  The issue that I am facing is on one of my forms I have a search field.  Well if I disallow edits then I cannot type anything into that search field to be able to do a search.  I need the user to be able to do a search of the data but not be able to edit the data unless an admin password is entered

Instead of disallowing edits on that Form you could lock all the fields except the fields/controls you want your users to be able to use. I would use a For Each Loop to loop through all the controls on the form..

Note: you will have to exclude some controls, such as labels, as they don't have a Locked property.
