AppendDelete in split db
Derek Landeau

Good morning,

With a split database, the front end is able to modify fields in records found in the linked tables, however Access does not allow the front end db to 'append'  or 'delete from'.

Is there a correct way to be able to accommodate this functionality while still keeping my database split?

Thanks,
Derek

Hi Derek.

On my split Databases, I can do deletes with no issues. Check the "Allow Delete" property of the form under Data tab. Make sure it is set to "Yes."

Thank you,

What about appends? I'm noticing that data entry forms with autonumber fields don't properly populate.

When opening a data entry form on a new record there is the '(New)' in the autonumber field, and it populates when the data is entered, but it is blank if the db is split.

If your back-end is an Access database that (New) should update immediately. If it's SQL Server, that value doesn't get assigned until the record is saved. Two totally different ways of processing.

Thank you both for the sanity check. I was dealing with this issue yesterday and hadn't found a solution (or a reason it wasn't working)

After pulling in all the split tables and then re-splitting the database, my data entry forms and append/delete from queries are working again, to include the autonumber field.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to diagnose why I was having the issue, but I did fix it.

Probably the database was corrupted....

The database was showing other signs of corruption, and a decompile/recompile was run as well, but it wasn't until I had also changed the tables to local tables and then re-split the database, making a brand new backend accdb file.

What was confusing was the fact that if I opened the tables in datasheet view on the front end database there would be an ms access info box telling me new records couldn't be added and deletions could not be made, and I'd have to do them in the backend file.

All is working as intended now.
