SharePoint

I went through the SharePoint seminar over the weekend. Since that was done some time ago, should it still behave the same today as it did then, with the tables in SharePoint and the front end on a user's desktop in accde format?

Hi Kim, I have done this with a couple customers and also went through the class.  Getting the tables to SP is really the main thing and once they are there, then all is good.  One issue that I have noticed is that Microsoft has made several changes to the SP interface.  One major pain that I also have encountered is the actual sharing process of the site to the users that are using the Access database.  There are like 12 different ways to do this in SP and at least as I have found, some work and some don't...

I have our IT department telling the the following: You design and publish a web database by using Access, and people who have accounts on the SharePoint site use the web database in a web browser.

I don't believe that we're talking about the same thing. FYI....our IT guys know nothing about Access and very little about SharePoint.

Yea you don't use access in a web browser.

The overall method from the seminar should be similar, although if your IT guys don't know anything about it, are you just trying to move to start using it to use the database? If it's not too late, I'd go to SQL server instead :P.

I would like to eventually go to SQL, but I'm so close in SharePoint that I don't want to abandon it and start over. I've got the tables uploaded to SharePoint and created a ACCDE file to send the user. I don't want this user to have access to change any queries, forms or reports at this time. Entering data and running reports will be their primary function. I am curious about the ACCDE file...when I go into it, I can change everything. Is this because I'm the admin on the database?

Kim if you are having issues or want some assistance outside the videos, I can give you my direct email.  I could probably save you a lot of headaches with SP.  Richard's video works good, but again, Microsoft has changed the SP interface.  Also, once any table gets to over 100k records, SP will not let you exceed that level.  So you really need to plan ahead.

Thank you John, I appreciate the offer. So far, I think I've got it. I've shared the tables/lists with the user and sent her the front end and she can run reports. So...that's a good sign as I see it. I hope to get this to SQL eventually. I was in a time crunch with a DB that I wrote over 20 years ago and promises were made by the boss that I needed to fulfill. Thanks again for the help.
