Unused Memo Fields Text Align Property Color
Da Como Agostino

Hi Richard,

I am almost done with all beginner-level tutorials currently available.
The Beginner level leaves me with three questions I would like to pose you :

1) Memo Data type  : How Much storage space does an unused Memo Data Type consume (  left blank ) ?
2) Doesn’t the Form inherit text Align property from the relative table ?  I have tried myself but without any results. Is there something wrong with my Access Edition ? – All the Other properties are inherited by forms apart from Text Align
3) I have tried to format a Text Field in the Table ( using this expression in the Format property  :  [Blue] ) but the text does not change color ,  unless I first set Uppercase (>)  or lowercase (<) in the same expression.
Thank you for you help and for your tutorials

Reply from Richard Rost:

1. Left BLANK, a memo field uses virtually no space. When you start filling it in with data, however, Access reserves a LOT of space for it. You can reclaim the unused space by compacting your database.

2. That's a good observation. I never noticed that before. I just tried it and mine behaves the same way. The Access developers either missed it or they just planned on the text align property only affecting the datasheet view of that field, not forms or reports you place it on.

3. I haven't covered this yet, but try this instead: @[Blue]

Basically the color definition by itself doesn't always trigger the formatting change. You can use the @ character to just say "display any character here" and then the color works. Odd, yes. This is one of the reasons I almost never use the format property at the table level to change colors.
