Ugly websites sell better

Ugly websites sell better.

I just read this great article which says what I've said for a long time. These fabulous websites with animations and gorgeous graphics everywhere are beautiful to look at, but that's it. They often lack functionality and put form over function.

Once on a while I get someone telling me my website looks like it's straight out of the 90s. I don't care. It serves it's purpose. My goal is to have a site that makes it easy for people to find what they want to learn, watch my videos, and get help in the forums. That's it.

I don't need it to be super pretty. Besides, I've always been very utilitarian myself. Function over form, I say.

What do you think?

If a site is too obscure and complicated with tons of features that aren't really need, it's just more to go wrong.
Your site is easy to navigate and I can usually find 95% of what I'm looking for in less than a minute.

You ask, so I answer.  As I've said before, you are super-busy, so I don't want to suggest improvements to this site unless you specifically ask for feedback -- or say anything that resembles asking for feedback:

Since you prefer "function over form" (and I do too), you may consider adding the following common functions to your forums.  We need the ability to:
- Quote messages (like I did above), as this is a pretty standard feature since the Usenet days.
- Edit posts (with a time limit, if needed).
- Type program code efficiently in posts (with the right fonts, indentation settings, etc.).  *Every* poster, not just the moderators, need this.
- Type unicode characters, which practically every messaging environment nowadays can do.  Posters here should at least be able to type whatever they see in Access.  At the minimum, the forums should allow characters of ASCII code 0 to 255, which include many European alphabets with grave, acute, circumflex, etc., signs.

Regarding the broader topic of the look of a website, sometimes the look IS the function.  Usually the function is to "control" how the user uses the site, show only what the user is allowed to see or use, things of that nature.  You can judge the function itself, of course.

Great Site, no question at all,
Navigation here is brilliant. and does everything we need ...

I couldn't agree more.  Websites are supposed to connect people to information.  (This was billed as the information superhighway, right?)

In my opinion, one of the easiest websites to navigate is Craigslist, which seems to be reviled by web designers because it is outdated.  I can find whatever I want, usually within 2 clicks.  The layout is clear and intuitive and it has remained consistent so I know where everything is located.

Personally, I like the look of this site.  It has stood the test of time and continues to do the job it was built to do.  The videos always load.

Also, what Kevin and Sammi said.

Thanks guys.

Kevin Yip: yes all of those features are on my to do list. Usually I roll them out to the moderators first, then the Veterans, then everyone. This is so we can catch issues before they go live to everyone. But yeah, working on the website isn't my top priority. But I'll get there.
