My plans for this week include finishing Developer 49, a "Part 2" to the Email Seminar where I show you how to READ email directly from Gmail (or any POP3 server) directly into your Access database, and of course more TechHelp videos.

What's on your schedule for this week?

Since Microsoft has announced that they will eventually be removing the ability to automate emails (sending and receiving) via Outlook, it is going to eventually be essential to read directly from the mail server if you want to process emails with your database. I do. I've been using Outlook for this for years - but I figure now is as good a time as any to switch.

Read email directly from POP3 server sounds very interesting.

I will soon receive around 150 confirmation emails from offices (one for each student we will be teaching) and then have to assign these to the respective students based on the text content.
It's obvious that I want to automate this. ^^
I had already planned to implement this myself, but haven't found the time yet because I certainly wouldn't be able to do it in the evening.

@Richard I'm not up on the new things of Outlook, just having used it for 20+ years without much regard.
What exactly does this mean? "Microsoft has announced that they will eventually be removing the ability to automate emails (sending and receiving) via Outlook"

Lars Schindler template should be ready in a day or two. The moderators are beta testing it now.

Thomas Gonder We've got a few years still but I figure its best to take care of this now: Microsoft is depreciating Classic Outlook. See the following...

Microsoft is transitioning to a new version of Outlook, referred to as "New Outlook," which does not support VBA macros or COM add-ins. This change affects automation tasks, such as sending and receiving emails from Microsoft Access or other VBA programs.

The rollout of New Outlook is occurring in stages:

- Stage 1: Opt-in
Currently, users can choose to try New Outlook by enabling a toggle in the classic Outlook interface.

- Stage 2: Opt-out
Starting January 2025, users with Business plans on the Current Channel will be automatically switched to New Outlook but can revert to classic Outlook if needed.

- Stage 3: Cutover
After a period of at least 12 months from Stage 2, users will no longer be able to switch back to classic Outlook. Existing installations of classic Outlook with perpetual licensing will continue to be supported until at least 2029.

For more detailed information, you can refer to Microsoft's official documentation:

Microsoft Page

Additionally, discussions among users and developers about this transition can be found on platforms like Reddit:

Reddit Thread

These changes mean that automation solutions relying on VBA for Outlook will need to be re-evaluated and potentially redesigned using alternative methods or tools.

@Richard I haven't "automated" email, other than in Outlook itself. Will "new and improved" Outlook still get my emails from Pop3 servers and the like?

I'm guessing you are meaning that Access won't be able to interface with Outlook to send/receive emails? Since I haven't looked into that yet, can you provide a link to a tech help, seminar or other that explains what you're currently doing and that won't work with new Outlook?

@Anyone I tried "New Outlook" about a year ago. I haven't interfaced it with Access. so that wasn't an issue. What was a BIG problem was that New Outlook made a complete mess of all my previous Outlook data. It took me a day to remove New Outlook and restore my old Outlook table and reread all the emails that went missing during the mess. I don't remember what all the issues were, they were so overwhelming. If I recall correctly, it made a mess of my subfolders for emails and contacts. But that was only the beginning.

Has anyone with a long history of using almost all the features that exist in old Outlook had success with the new Outlook? If not, where are the problem areas that still exist?

Sending Email: This will no longer work. This will.

As far as receiving email, I teach how to interface with Outlook from Access to get your emails in the Email Seminar. That will no longer work once MS makes the change. This new template that I built will handle that by connecting directly to the POP3 mail server.
