At the heart of science is an essential balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes--an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive they may be, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new.

Shredding Boxes

So I know this might sound a little weird, but does anyone else enjoy shredding boxes? So, little backstory: my wife and I, we might order a few too many things from Amazon, so we've always got lots of empty boxes in our garage. I just kind of got sick of having to flatten them and then put them in the recycle bin.

So, I bought a little paper shredder, and this thing is a beast. It'll easily take cardboard. I mean, I have to rip it up into paper-sized strips, but it shreds them all up and gives me cardboard confetti. Now, instead of having to take three baskets to the curb, I just have the one. But more importantly than all of that, it's just oddly soothing. I sit there for 10-15 minutes and just shred boxes, and it relaxes me. I don't know why. Maybe because my job is so cerebral, and I'm always constantly having to think, it's nice to have a meaningless task for once. I don't know, it's weird.

Same problem here except my shredder is not man enough for the task. I've been thinking about getting a new shredder for a while now. Simply because I would love to take a stack of paper and just shove it down there. Mine can only take about three sheets before it starts to complain.

Sami get this little guy. It's amazing. It's rated for 12 sheets, but I swear I've crammed more than that in there. It will take cardboard. It has taken cardboard with staples in it. It's taken plastic, and it just happily accepts everything I stick in it. The only thing I got to do is cut it into 8.5 inch wide sheets, like if it's a big cardboard box, but I've got an electric cardboard cutter for that, and it works fantastic.

Your electric "cardboard" cutter is a wrist saver when I'm cutting multiple layers of fabric for a quilt as well.

Could use your "waste" to get the smoker started.

Yeah, I tried to think of some use that I might have for all that shredded cardboard, but I really can't think of any.

Ah! Someone who likes gadgets as much as I do! That's one of the benefits of living in the middle of my 20 acres of woods, which is located in the middle nowhere. Just build a trash burner out of cement blocks, and burn the boxes! I'd have to go almost 30 miles to find a curb!

Back when I lived in Buffalo, we had a little more land, and I built my own fire pit out back out of cement cinder blocks. Can't do that here in Florida though - there's often burn bans, and it's too hot most of the time for a fire outside.

We use ours for bonfire starter.  We sometimes use it flat as weed barrier.  As long as it is clear cardboard, you could also use it as mulch.  It would break down to add organic material to the soil, if your soil is sandy.  It may also help hold moisture.

If you have a leaf blower and neighbor that you want to annoy, you might be able to come up with something really fun.  :)
