Matinee Tuesday
Richard Rost

I'm taking a half day today so I can go see the new Superman movie. I hate going opening weekend when the theater's packed with loud popcorn crunchers and people who still don't understand how silence works. I'd rather wait until the Monday or Tuesday after opening weekend and catch a quiet matinee with five other people who also don't like crowds.

Before I head out, I wanted to share something fun with you. I normally don't buy stuff I see advertised on social media, because 9 times out of 10 it ends in disappointment or a borderline scam. (Spoiler alert: I've got a whole Captain's Log coming soon about the "Enterprise model" that showed up looking like it fell out of a cereal box.)

But this one? This one was a win.

I picked up a Star Trek-themed desk mat from a company that sells a whole line of sci-fi and retro designs. It looks awesome in person, especially at night with the LED glow. The photo doesn't really do it justice, but trust me, it's slick. And yes, this is my actual office setup - messy shelves and all. I've only lived here three years, so I haven't had time to fully unpack. You understand.

You'll also notice my mouse situation is... a thing. Yes, that's my Access Learning Zone "If you set it, you gotta forget it!" mouse pad. (1) And yes, I'm running a wrist-rest flipped backward with a secondary forearm cushion. It may look weird, but it works. If you spend half your life mousing like I do, comfort matters.

Anyway, that's all for today. Just wanted to share a little piece of my nerdy life with you before heading off to watch a guy in red tights save the world. Again.

Live long, and ergonomically prosper.
RR

(1) Get yours here.

And yes, that is a lock box under my desk. It's just a footrest. I lost the key to it many, many years ago lol.

You work on a laptop!? I know Access doesn’t take much, but I would’ve thought you used a desktop and a couple of huge monitors. I’m not dumping on laptops (I have 2), but I can’t play most AAA games on a laptop 🤓

Yes, I've been working exclusively on laptops for about the past 10 years. In fact, my last three laptops were Lenovo Legions. I love them. They're great. When I decide it's time for a new one, I just downgrade this one to my side laptop, which does things like compile videos and stuff for me. Then, from there, I downgrade to my server, which runs my Access database on a loop. I've also got another one for travel, so they're definitely a whole family of laptops lol.

I used to have a setup with six separate monitors on arms and I could position them any way I wanted. But then I discovered that I prefer one big monitor. So I picked up a Samsung 49" curved monitor. Love it.

As far as games go, I really haven't played any computer games in years, probably at least 10 years now. It's just one of those things where when I'm done working all day on a computer, I don't wanna spend my free time on a computer too. You know, it's like a mechanic doesn't wanna spend all day working on cars, then go home and have to work on his car. And I'm sure a landscaper doesn't want to spend all day working on lawns, then have to go home and cut his own lawn.

That's why I'm glad I wasn't a gynecologist lol.

Besides, all games have gone downhill since Duke Nukem and Baldur's Gate.

And don't make fun of my poor cable management skills. I've only lived here three years, so I haven't had time to properly wire everything up yet. LOL.

I’m currently traveling with my laptop, so what am I playing? Baldur’s Gate! Haha.
Bought a Dell this time- buyer’s remorse…I’ll have to look at the Legion next time.

Love me some Baldur's Gate. When I travel, I carry my Legion laptop and this 18" external monitor. Fits perfectly in my checked luggage - thin enough not to take up too much space. Rugged enough to deal with being tossed around.

Hope you enjoy the movie but just remember sometimes it's good to go on the weekends only because silence can be deadly
