It Could Be Worse

I tend to agree with a merger of thoughts...

Last spring, it was brought up to maybe shift midway - 1/2 hour forward and then lock it there. I tend to lean into this type of compromise versus one or the other.

As a note, I"ve also seen ideas that would make it worse too, lol. It had been suggested we need more timezones such that not only would the time change as you travel east to west, but also north to south. In this proposal, each of the four main timezones in the US would be broken into as many as 4 sub zones - some that change seasonally and some that don't.

For example: ESST (East Southern Standard Time), ECSST (East Central Southern Standard Time), ECNST (East Central Northern Standard Time), and ENST (East Northern Standard Time) all made from the existing EST. ESST would have no DST, ENST would have DST and the two centrals could make a request to either use or not use DST from Congress but that would be approved depending on location - for instance a state in the middle of the central zones couldn't select no dst if all the states around it chose dst. And this pattern would replicate for the other major continental zones.

If it's bad now, imagine what that would be like!

More time zones would definitely be a bad idea. I can get on board with the half-hour time shift; that's fine. My major problem is with having to change the clocks. I don't care if you shifted everybody back five hours, just stop changing the damn clocks.

But as far as the north and south time zones go, I can see where places up north, like where I used to live in Buffalo, the days are much, much shorter in the winter and also much longer in the summer. And the closer you get to the equator, the closer days are to 12 hours long. So, it might make sense for some people. But no, I just think it's a bad idea.

Worldwide we have 38 time zones already, for a 24 hour day.  We would have to create 4 new ones to do the 30 minute thing.

I think what he's saying with the 30-minute thing is that you just move forward half an hour and leave it there. So Eastern Time would be half an hour ahead of what it is right now, and that's it for the whole time zone. I could get behind that.

I was just trying to point out that I don't think that there is currently a time zone between GMT(-4) and GMT(-5) currently and moving Florida to GMT(-4.5) would create a 39th zone, since the old ones are used in other countries as well.  I probably could have worded it better.  It would be better than changing clocks twice a year but not as good as having the US on universal time.
