Case of the Mondays
Richard Rost

Captains Log: Shore leave complete. Artificial gravity feels heavier than I remember. Coffee rations depleted, morale questionable, and I am proceeding to my workstation at impulse power. My office appears to be overrun with tribbles, so I am requesting backup and possibly a photon torpedo. The bridge crew seems surprised I made it back voluntarily. Systems are nominal, but my brain is not yet synced to Starfleet standard time. Reboot in progress. Scans of the office show no signs of intelligent life. Must be Monday. I now face a hostile life form known as the To Do List. Shields up.

Back in the office today after a week away celebrating my wife's birthday. I finally got through all the customer service emails. So if you were expecting to hear from me and didn't, send me another email because it must have been eaten by the tribbles or something.

The video that's online today is one I scheduled before vacation. Fortunately it's a short week here in the States thanks to Turkey Day on Thursday. I will have a couple of new videos ready for tomorrow and Wednesday, plus Fridays Quick Queries episode as usual.

I'm also continuing work on my SQL Server for Microsoft Access Developers course, which I am really looking forward to. This is going to be a full course, just like my Access, Excel, and Word series. We will start with the basics and assume you know Microsoft Access but nothing else. There will be a beginner lesson or two that cover the why's and how's of using SQL Server, how to install it, how to set up SSMS, and then we will dig into migrating your Access databases to SQL Server.

I have a couple of books I am tearing through. Ive been using SQL Server for decades, but I have never formally taught it, so this is my chance to fill in the gaps and learn a few new tricks myself. More updates on that will follow, but for those of you waiting for it, rest assured that it is coming very soon.

Welcome back Captain

One thing I would love for you to address in migrating Access databases to SQL Server is the fact that if you export your tables to SQL server, none of the Indexes- not even the primary keys Index- are created on the SQL server

Many thanks

Are tribbles eatable?  Maybe it be like eating gummy's....Some fun folks  can't wait for the new course.

Richard That's a lot of tribbles!  Maybe you need to go to contact Cyrano Jones and get a Glommer.  LOL!!! LLAP!

Juan Per the animated series, tribbles are eaten by glommers, unless the tribble becomes too fat for the glommer to eat it. No comment on how they taste...

Yes, in my quest to complete my Star Trek database I have finished watching the original series and have moved on to the animated series. Then 4 movies, then TNG...

I've watched everything ever made about Star Trek up until a couple of years ago. I haven't watched all of Discovery because I just don't like it. I haven't watched Lower Decks because I find it annoying. And I haven't watched The Animated Series since I was a kid, so I don't remember a lot of those episodes.

Michael It's been "years" since I watched ST:TAS.  I loved that many of the original actors voiced characters.  I have the animated series in a "boxed" set.  I may have to break it out over the holidays and binge watch it.  LOL!!!  LLAP!

Richard There were ST series after ST:E? Nah...   LOL!!!

Sam Strange New Worlds is actually VERY good. I'd like to say that I am excited for the new Starfleet Academy coming up, but I really hate the new futuristic timeline. Plus young people annoy me - which is one of the reasons I'm not a Discovery fan. Too many kids. So I'm gonna give it a try, but my hopes are not high. And I'm a poet, and I did not know it.

Richard Poets make the best coders!  Here is a poem for you (yes I googled it).
The Coder's Muse
The world thinks logic, cold and clear,
Is all the coder holds so dear.
A rigid syntax, rule on rule,
Learned in a stern, exacting school.
But look more closely, pause and see,
The craft has roots in poetry.
The poet weighs each word with care,
A precise meaning, sharp and rare.
No wasted syllables allowed,
To stand out from the common crowd.
So too the coder, keen and bright,
Finds the best words to make things right.
For naming is an art, a grace,
That gives each function its own place.
A variable, a class, a flow,
Intent the future self will know.
Not random noise, nor sloppiness,
But structured thought in its finesse.
The form dictates the content's soul,
A stanza works to make it whole.
Indentation, line, and break,
A silent guide for meaning's sake.
In Python, Ruby, C, or Java,
Structure's key, an unseen power.
Refactoring, the poet's edit,
To give the work its lasting credit.
To strip away the excess fat,
And build a world where all things act
With purpose, rhythm, a design,
A clear, communicative line.
So, when you see a program run,
Remember where the craft's begun:
With patterns, prose, and chosen words,
The finest thoughts the mind affords.
The poet's mind, a structural guide,
Where logic and where art reside.

Richard Yes, someday I plan to grind through Lower Decks and Prodigy. Discovery grew on me- I just ignored the characters I disliked. SNW breaks so much canon I’ve found it hard to enjoy, but really liked the singing episode.

I've watched all the Star Trek live action movies and series, haven't watched any of the original animated series yet.

First time I tried watching Lower Decks, seemed more like a "Rugrats Space Adventure" than Star Trek, but I've managed to get through some of it. I actually thought Prodigy was good especially for kids, but I haven't seen any of the episodes that came out since it moved to Netflix.

Did anyone watch the Star Trek Shorts (2018)?  I found them to fill in some of the gaps.

I think I did...?

2018 was kind of a haze. LOL
