So back in 2023 when AI was just in its infancy. I was having fun on Facebook and I asked DALLE, which was the best image generator at the time, to create me a picture of Captain Picard riding a bull. And this is what it gave me...
I gave the image to ChatGPT just now and I said, "Can you recreate these images of Captain Picard riding a bull with your best technology today?" Here's what it gave me...
So, then I figured instead of having it try to reproduce the old photo, I would just give it a brand new prompt and a brand new thread. I said, "Give me a picture of Captain Picard riding a bull." This is what I got...
I'm not sure if they're being cautious not to violate copyright because the Starfleet insignia is different, and that obviously doesn't look like Patrick Stewart. So I asked Gemini to do the same thing, and here's what Gemini gave me...
So GPT is definitely being a lot more careful now not to exactly match celebrity likenesses. I've noticed that because, as you guys know, I always make pictures for my captain's log with Spock or Worf or somebody. They're making it look kinda like him but not exactly like him which I understand. You don't wanna make likenesses of celebrities doing crazy things like Picard riding a bull without their permission.
And that last one was Gemini when I gave it the same prompt, and I think that looks more like Joe Biden. It definitely looks fake. So GPT is definitely winning the image generation contest right now.

Well, as long as I don't zoom in, GPT is giving you a passable Picard - but definitely see the difference when I blow it up
Donald yeah, which is funny because like 6 months ago I would ask for Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and boom! It would look exactly like him. So they must have been getting some heat from the studios about infringing on their copyrights. Although, from what I understand, OpenAI just signed an agreement with Disney to be able to use the likenesses of some of their characters. That should be interesting. I haven't tried that yet, though.

I was watching a couple of videos of Star Trek "space pirates" musical videos today and the faces are very good! I was wondering how they could get away with it. Maybe the producers have permission? Anyway, I'll continue enjoying the space-themed singing videos! LOL!!!

This all begs the question about AI and copyright law. I always get the sense that the AI makers are saying “it’s the algorithm, not me!”
I am firmly on any creator’s side. What if someone entered the prompt “Create me an instructional video like X from CLZ?”
I know a lot of artists of various genres and not one believes AI is properly controlled.
