Ok... this is one of those "wait, WHAT?" pieces of tech that instantly made me grin.
Lenovo just showed off a rollable widescreen laptop concept. It starts as a normal-size laptop display, but then the screen literally rolls out wider when you need more workspace. Like: portable mode when you're traveling, widescreen mode when it's time to get real work done.
And this hits exactly the pain point I've had for years. Whenever I travel, I bring a smaller laptop because I want it light and easy to carry (and because laptops have to come with you in carry-on). But then I end up packing an external widescreen monitor too in my checked luggage, which means extra weight, extra cables, extra setup, and one more thing to forget in the hotel room.
A rollable screen solves all of that.
Sure, it's still a proof of concept right now, but just imagine when this becomes a real consumer product. A lightweight travel laptop that expands into a real widescreen workspace when you need it?
Yes please. Inject that directly into my tech-loving soul.
Yeah, that'd be sweet. I'd be happy even if it folded out like they've got those ones you can attach to your laptop. I tried one of those. It clips on, and then it folds out to the sides. That's not bad; I don't mind that, but it's just big, heavy, and clunky. They need to build something into the laptop without having to attach cables and all that nonsense. That's why I want this rollable. I'd be happy with one good wide-screen.

Where is it "rolling?" Do you pull it laterally and it stretches? Is the screen bendable and rolled up in the sides?
Yes... but you don't have to pull it. It's motorized.

Looks cool but I will definitely not be among the first to buy. Want to see that motor have 5 yrs of life, minimum.

I'd like to see them build comfortable, normal looking, and affordable glasses that augment the reality so that your screen is whatever you want it to be and the computer is built into a keyboard. I read an article about it several months ago and a quick google search led me to sightful.com which seems to be the source. I wear glasses too so I'd love for them to take that into consideration.
Michael yeah, I was one of the first to buy a foldable phone when Samsung first came out with the flip series, and it was cool, but the crease was extremely noticeable after only about six months. I've had three of them since I think I'm up to the Flip 6 now or whatever the latest iteration is, and it's much much better. I've had this one for a while now, and you can barely notice the crease, so they're getting better with that technology. But yes, early adopters like me generally have to suffer through the growing pains lol, but I'm a gadget geek and I'm a nerd, and I have to have the latest and greatest. It's like software. You got to learn how to deal with the 1.0 bugs.
Ben speaking as someone who needs a prescription bifocal, I'd love to have a clip-on or at least something where you can adjust the focus with software. That'd be cool.
