VB.NET is the next major version of the Visual Basic language. There are a lot of great improvements in it. A lot of these enhancements are things that "professional" programmers will find most useful, like true object-oriented inheritance, overloading, strict type checking, etc. But there are a lot of other cool enhancements in it too. Personally, I still use Visual Basic 6 for my own projects. If it ain't broke don't fix it, I always say. I have yet to come up to a programming problem where I couldn't find a solution in VB6. Unfortunately, I have to get with the times and start making some VB.NET and ASP.NET courses. New people learning how to program now days won't even be able to find VB6 to buy anymore... so I'll probably make one or two more VB courses, and then move up to VB.NET myself.
