Width of web sites to monitors on computer screens
Martin C. Meyer

Hello Richard,

I am working with Microsoft Front Page 2002. How do you determine the width of web sites to monitors on computer screens? Let me explain a little more (and you are probably saying, that it would help).

To look what you see on your computer and that every one else will see your site just like the same thing and way you see it on your computer the site, I mean your site.

So to say, your web site you see on your computer (as you work on and view your work)
You hope that everyone else will see it that way you see it and not crazy looking cause of monitor sizes, resolution of computer’s monitors.

Like an example:, images and text not aligned right, the way you want it and see it on your computer’s monitor. I hope you understand what I am asking? And I hope you can help me with this?.  Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Martin C. Meyer

Answer from Richard Rost:

Martin, the only way you can get the user's monitor size (resolution) is by using some Javascript programming, which is more complex that I can go into here.

However, you can design your web pages so that they grow or shrink in size based on the user's screen resolution. I like to build my pages around tables (yes, I still like tables). I'll make a static left column (maybe 150 pixels for a navigation menu) and a static right column (for ads), and then I don't specify a size for the middle column where the actual page content goes. This will then grow or shrink based on the user's screen.

Of course, you could always just design your pages around the smallest size possible. I would say 800 pixels across is probably the worst you'd get for a visitor now days.
