Over the past few months, I have heard from a few users that some of my database downloads are being flagged as potential viruses. I am not sure what these antivirus companies are trying to accomplish, but let me clarify: the downloads you get from my website contain ACCDB files. These are Microsoft Access database files, and they cannot contain a virus on their own.
Now, it is true that malicious developers could embed harmful code in a Microsoft Access database. However, I can assure you that anything you download from my website is completely safe. These warnings from antivirus programs seem to be a case of overzealous scanning. They are simply reminding you that it is possible for databases to contain harmful code, but this does not apply to the files you get from me.
Keep in mind, though, that even if a database contains VBA or macros, they will not run unless the file is placed in a trusted folder. This gives you the opportunity to download the database, open it, inspect it, and confirm it is safe before moving it to a trusted location.
I suspect many antivirus companies do not fully understand how Microsoft Access works, which might explain these false warnings. Rest assured, my files are secure and safe to use.
Got another email from a student today saying a ZIP file containing JUST a PDF (handbook) was flagged as having a virus. I downloaded it myself and sure enough, my browser flagged it too. No idea why. So I just posted the PDF file directly (without ZIPping it) and that seems to work fine. Very weird. If you encounter a file that does this, let me know specifically which file it is, and I'll look into it.
