The lifetime of a human being is measured by decades, the lifetime of the Sun is a hundred million times longer. Compared to a star, we are like mayflies, fleeting ephemeral creatures who live out their lives in the course of a single day.

Excel Topics...

Dear Excel Students,

Right now, I'm working on the next new Excel courses. II just finished Excel 230, and I have enough material here for dozens of new courses after that. What I want to know is what features YOU want to see. I need to know what material the majority of you are interested in.

For example, I could literally spend 2 or 3 hours of class time covering statistical analysis. I could spend another 3 hours on charting. I could do a whole class just on working with date & time functions. So, before I spend a ton of time covering features that nobody wants to see... or I only gloss over something that everyone wants to see... let me know what YOU are interested in.

Based on the feedback from this poll, I'll adjust the next couple of classes accordingly. Thank you so much for your help..... Oh, and I would also like to know what version of Excel you're using - so I know whether or not to upgrade my lessons to 2007 soon. I'm still using XP myself, which is perfectly fine. 2003 didn't really change anything important.

Email Address:
Your Name:

Microsoft Excel 2007

Are you using Excel 2007 right now, or planning to upgrade to it in the near future? Microsoft changed a lot of the interface with the new "ribbon" menu. Personally, I don't care for it - but a lot of people like it. Most of the rest of the program is still the same, but the menus have all changed.

Should I upgrade my Excel tutorials for the 2007 version?
  Yes
  No

Are you interesting in an "Upgrading To Excel 2007" tutorial to show you what has changed from XP/2003 to 2007?
  Yes
  No

What Topics Are You Interested In

OK, here's where you can let me know what topics you're interested in. Check any and all of the topics that you would like to see me go into depth on. I will cover all of these topics to some extent. The more people that respond as interested in a specific topic, however, the greater the detail I will go into. If you really don't care to see much about a certain topic, don't check it.

Topics:
Entering & Editing Data
Productivity tips, keyboard shortcuts, customizing, advanced data
  validation, transposing data, etc.
Error Handling
Understanding error messages, actual v. displayed values, auditing,
precedents, dependents, circular references, trapping errors
Rounding Numbers
Lots of different ways you can round numbers with examples,
dealing with problems that rounding causes
Advanced Data Formatting
number and text format codes, custom number formats (all those
wierd and wacky codes), more conditional formatting
Text Manipulation Techniques & Functions
Functions to work with text: Left, Right, Mid, Len, Text, Dollar,
Trim, Clean, IsBlank, etc. Char codes, removing middle names
Date & Time Functions
Understanding how dates and times work, Functions: Today, Date,
day, weekday, month, year, converting non-dates to dates,
number of workdays between two dates, calculating a persons age,
Datedif function, dates of holidays, all kinds of cool tips
Count & Summary Functions
Rows(), Columns(), countblank, count numeric, text, blank cells,
countif, frequency distribution, conditional sums, sumif
Lookup Functions
We already learned Vlookup, but there's more like it: lookup,
Hlookup, match, index, choosing between multiple lookup tables,
two-column lookups, address() function, offsets, and then all of
the database functions: DSUM, DAverage, etc.
Unit Conversions
Converting between different types of information: feet to meters,
miles to kilometers, pounds to grams, that kind of thing.
Charts & Graphs
I already covered basic charting and graphing in one of the earlier
classes - but I only scratched the surface. There are a ton of things
you can do with charts that I didn't even mention.
Pictures & Drawing
Again, I only scratched the surface on this. You can really make
your spreadsheets and charts look good if you can master the
drawing techniques I can show you.
Importing & Exporting Data
Working with text files, linking and embedding data with other
applications - again, I only showed you a little bit when we worked
  with Excel and Word
Using External Database Files
Connecting to and getting data from an external data source such
as Access or an SQL Server.
What-If Analysis
Scenarios, what-if analysis, one- and two-input tables
Goal Seek and Solver
What-if analysis backwards. Solver with gantt charts
Linking and Consolidating Worksheets
Working with multiple workbooks/sheets and consolidating them
  together.
Using Excel With Other People
Using Excel on a network? I'll show you how to track changes made
by other people, understand file reservations, share workbooks
without problems, email your data back and forth, review changes,
hide formulas and protect your books with passwords.
Excel And The Internet
Using Excel to publish HTML or publish as an interactive web page,
saving Excel data as an XML file, work with hyperlinks in your
sheets, using Web queries, the HYPERLINK function
More With PivotTables & PivotCharts
I spent two whole classes on PivotTables, but would you believe
there's even more! Like I didn't show you how to create a PT from
multiple ranges, or from external data. Plus, I didn't cover
PivotCharts in much detail, or show you GETPIVOTDATA function.
SharePoint Team Services
If you're using it, you'll know what it is. If not, don't worry about it.
Optional Add-Ins
Exactly what are all of these optional add-ins that come with Excel
Statistical Analysis
This is a topic I could spend weeks on. Standard deviation,
normdist, median, probabilities, regression, hypothesis testing,
only check this box if you are serious about statistical analysis
(like geeky serious - like me).
Sales Forecasting
Again another topic I could spend weeks on. Forecasts based on
regression, moving averages, trend analysis, seasonal sales, etc.
Again, only check this if you are serious about sales forecasting.
Advanced Math Functions
Here I'm talking about real advanced math: trigonometry (sin, cos,
etc.) solving right triangles, simultaneous equations, calculating
area, circumference, and all that stuff.
Financial Functions & Calculations
Learning about all of the different financial terms: pv, fv, pmt, rate,
nper, etc. advanced loan calculations, amortization, credit cards,
irregular payments, depreciation, etc. Only check this if you are
real serious about financial functions - you're a banker, accountant,
or some other financial professional. This is deep stuff!
Data Analysis Toolpak
There are a ton of extra tools available for Excel if you're into data
analysis: variance, correlation, covariance, descriptive statistics,
exponential smoothing, fourier analysis, histograms, etc.
Again, only check this one if you're a serious statistics nerd like me.
Recording VBA Macros
Recording and using macros in Excel to automate tasks. This is
  the novice part of macros.
Editing & Writing VBA Macros
This is the expert part. Writing and working with VBA Macros can
be a full-time job. I can teach it (I do it all the time), but I need to
know how many people are serious about learning it. So only check
this if you are serious about learning how to program Excel VBA.
