Southernmost Student

Received this email from a student recently:

---

I'm from Invercargill, New Zealand. I could be your most southern subscriber?

---

I wasn't sure, so I figured I'd ask ChatGPT:

Invercargill is very far south. In fact, it's one of the southernmost cities in the world that isn't in Antarctica. So your student has a strong claim to the title. But here are a few contenders that are further south by country, not just city:

Countries with land further south than Invercargill (which sits around 46.4 S latitude):

Chile - Has settlements like Puerto Williams (55 S) and even Puerto Toro, which is considered the southernmost inhabited place on Earth outside Antarctica.

Argentina - Ushuaia (around 55 S) is a well-known "southernmost city" and is further south than Invercargill.

Falkland Islands (UK territory) - Stanley sits around 51.7 S, which is also south of Invercargill.

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (UK territory) - Uninhabited or research-based, but technically further south.

Countries like Australia, South Africa, and any island nations like Madagascar, Tonga, or even the southern tip of Brazil do not go further south than Invercargill.

So unless one of your students is in southern Chile, southern Argentina, or maybe the Falklands, your Invercargill student likely is your southernmost. You can tell him he's got the title... unless someone from Puerto Williams logs in.

---

Well, I have a handful of students in Chile and Argentina:

Chile: Antofagasta, Concon, Las Condes, Providencia, Quilpue, Santiago, Valparaiso

Argentina: Beccar, Bernal, Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires, Tigre

None of those cities in Chile are further south than Invercargill.

I've got lots of other students in New Zealand, but none of their cities are further south.

I do not have any students from South Georgia or the South Sandwich Islands. Unfortunately, I have no students from Antarctica that I'm aware of - that have taken my classes or are paid members. Although if you are in Antarctica and you're reading this, let me know. That would be cool to know.

I do believe that I had a couple of penguins sign up for some lessons, but they paid me in fish, so that doesn't count.

Now I'm curious who the northernmost student might be.

Did a quick database search. Looks like it's Sebastian from Honningsvag, Norway at 70.98 degrees North latitude. He hasn't logged on since 2021, however, so it's unlikely he reading this. Should I email him? LOL.

If you think you're further north than Sebastian or further south than Sean, post a comment down below!

Oh, and in case you're interested, here's the complete list of all of the countries I have students in (paid students or members) listed in order of popularity. So I have the most students in the USA (of course) then the UK, Canada, and so on...
