Garbage In, Garbage Out

Over the past couple of years, I've spent countless hours interacting with ChatGPT. As the language models have evolved, I've noticed something intriguing: when I approach the AI with politeness, the responses tend to be more helpful and nuanced. Conversely, when I'm abrupt or terse, the quality of the answers often diminishes.

At first glance, this might seem counterintuitive. After all, AI doesn't possess emotions. However, it's designed to recognize and mirror patterns in human language. By analyzing vast amounts of text, it learns to associate certain tones and phrasings with specific types of responses. So, when you engage with it politely, it draws upon data that reflects courteous interactions, leading to more refined outputs.

Recent studies* support this observation. Research indicates that polite prompts can lead to improved AI performance, resulting in more accurate and detailed answers. This phenomenon isn't about the AI "feeling" appreciated but rather about how it processes and responds to the input it receives.

Any programmer or database analyst knows: garbage in, garbage out.

So, the next time you're seeking assistance from an AI, consider your approach. A simple "please" or "thank you" might just enhance the quality of your interaction.

Another interesting article. Your politeness has a cost (in dollars) but it's worth it.

@Richard I've tried both approaches with ChatGPT, more as a test of the black box. I too have received better responses with politeness. Same goes with the ADS.
