Let's talk about the Anecdotal Fallacy. You've seen it. You've heard it. You've probably even used it without realizing it. It's when someone tosses out a personal story or isolated experience as a rebuttal to real data. And somehow, their neighbor's friend's uncle's experience trumps the entire CDC, NASA, or Starfleet Command.
My grandma was the queen of this kind of thing. She had a home remedy for everything that she swore by. Honey on a mosquito bite? Clears it right up. Vinegar in the ears cures a cold. Holding your breath resets your heart rhythm. Now, that last one might actually be legit in specific cases, but the rest? Pure anecdote. They worked for her once or twice, so she passed them down like gospel. It's basically an oral tradition of trial-and-error wrapped in nostalgia.
The problem is, anecdotes aren't evidence. Not in science, anyway. If you walk into a lab and say, "Well I saw this happen," it means absolutely nothing unless someone else can repeat your results. In science, repeatability is truth. In the courtroom, though? It's a whole different ballgame. We live in a system where someone saying, "I saw him do it," can send another person to prison. That should make you pause. Because if you ask ten people the same question about the same event, you'll sometimes get ten wildly different stories.
This is one of the reasons people confuse anecdote with proof. They assume that because eyewitness testimony counts in court, it should count in medicine, science, or even policy decisions. But science doesn't care what you saw. Science only cares what can be tested, repeated, and independently confirmed. Just because you once saw a bird fly upside-down doesn't mean we rewrite the laws of aerodynamics.
In politics, anecdotal fallacies show up constantly. Bring up climate change and someone will say, "Well, my cousin lives in Minnesota and she said they had the coldest winter in 20 years, so global warming is clearly fake." Thank you, Steve. One snowstorm in your zip code doesn't overturn decades of global temperature data. That's weather. The other thing is climate. Totally different systems. This is like saying you saw a cat bark once, so now biology is broken.
Medicine? Oh boy. Hot button issue. Try bringing up vaccine data and someone will respond with, "My aunt said she got the flu shot once and still got the flu. So I don't trust those." Right. That's like saying you wore a seatbelt and still got bruised in a crash, so now seatbelts are useless. Anecdotes don't invalidate entire systems. They just highlight that no system is perfect every time.
In the fitness world, anecdotes are the entire foundation of most fad diets. "My friend said she lost 30 pounds eating nothing but bacon and peanut butter, so that's clearly the best plan." No. That's an anomaly. Just because someone got lucky or temporarily lost weight on a horrible diet doesn't make it sound advice. You can find someone who smoked their whole life and never got cancer, but that doesn't mean cigarettes are healthy. It means biology has outliers.
This happens in IT all the time. I've had clients say things like, "We don't need antivirus. Our boss said he's never used antivirus software and he's never had a virus before." That's cute. That's like saying, "I've never been in a car crash, so I don't need insurance." Just because nothing has gone wrong yet doesn't mean you're invincible. Especially if you're talking about Windows, where corruption isn't a risk - it's practically a feature. (4)
I had a client once who brought me in to fix an Access database that had suddenly started acting up: sluggish, bloated, and unreliable. Classic story. It had been working fine for years. Of course it had. That's what always happens... until it doesn't. Their in-house IT guy had built the system himself, but when I started reviewing it, it was clear he hadn't followed any standard design principles. Nothing was normalized. Data was copied into multiple tables everywhere. No indexes. No relational integrity. Everyone using the same unsplit ACCDB file straight off the shared drive. It was held together with duct tape and misplaced confidence.
When I pointed out that the entire thing was bloated and fragile, he pushed back. "Well, another Access consultant I know said he has been doing it this way for years and never had a problem. So that's why we set it up like this." That one anecdotal success story - some other guy's lucky streak - was enough to dismiss decades of database design principles and real-world performance warnings. He even had the company replace the network hub and some of the cabling. That wasn't the problem.
Once we actually dug in, it became obvious: the performance bottleneck was coming from the bloated structure, the redundant data, and the fact that ten people were hammering away at the same unsplit file. The moment the record count hit a certain point, everything slowed to a crawl. But hey, it worked for that one guy, so obviously normalization is just overkill. (5)
That's like saying you've never changed your oil and the car hasn't died yet - so clearly oil changes are overrated. Just because something limped along without best practices doesn't mean those best practices are optional. It just means you got lucky for a while. And that's not a strategy. That's a time bomb with a friendly user interface.
And of course, there's always a Star Trek example. Imagine McCoy saying, "One of my colleagues said that he gave a patient cordrazine and it saved his life, so it's safe." Yeah? Well, the last time you took it, you jumped through a time portal and almost deleted all of history. So maybe we don't generalize from one success story.
Anecdotes are emotionally powerful. That's why people lean on them. Stories stick with us more than statistics. If someone tells you a friend's kid got sick from a vaccine, that story has more pull than a chart showing thousands of cases where vaccines prevented illness. But that's the trap. That one story feels real, but in the grand scheme, it's just a data point - and possibly an unreliable one.
So what's the lesson here? Use anecdotes to connect, to empathize, to illustrate. But don't use them to dismiss facts. Personal experience is not the same as objective evidence. If you saw something work once, great - consider it a lead. But don't treat it as proof. Anecdotes can suggest, but they don't confirm.
Picard would never say, "Forget the Starfleet database, Number One. I just have a hunch." He checks the logs. He reviews the data. He listens to Data. He doesn't rewrite protocol because someone's grandma said honey cures Klingon rash.
Anecdotes make us feel smart. But data makes us be smart. And knowing the difference is what separates logical thinkers from the rest of the galaxy.

(5) - After talking to this "developer" a bit more about where he learned all this, it turns out his entire Access education came from a 6-hour course at the local community college and what he picked up from a few books. And the "expert" he was quoting? Just the guy who taught that class - credentials unknown, logic questionable. I've taken college courses before where it was painfully obvious the instructor was barely staying one chapter ahead of the class. This felt like one of those situations.
P.S. I try to keep things here focused on tech, teaching, and the occasional sarcastic life lesson, but since vaccine safety came up earlier in this post, I want to be clear about where I stand. This is not a political site, and I do my best to avoid stepping into religious or political debates here. But when politics or religion conflict with science, I will always side with science. That doesn't mean "alternative science" or whatever happens to be trending on social media. I mean actual science: published, peer-reviewed, tested, and repeatable. That's how we've built everything from vaccines to satellites to the very computers we all use. If the global scientific community agrees on something, whether it's vaccine safety, climate change, the age of the Earth, evolution, or gravity, that's not up for debate here. That's the framework we build from. You don't have to agree with me on everything. But this is a learning space rooted in evidence, logic, and critical thinking. And that includes trusting the process that got us the technology we're all here to learn.
A topic near and dear to my heart. I've posted before about vaccines. It's not just thousands. Vaccines have saved the lives of 10s of millions over time. No one remembers smallpox and polio. It will be so ironic when polio starts coming back. What's mind-blowing is that more and more Americans are trusting anecdote over science. As a surrogate marker: only 63% of Americans believe that getting the Covid vaccine is safer than getting Covid itself.
