Ever since I became aware of the joy of fireworks (I might have still been in diapers) I drooled over the thought of getting my hands on them - yes I still have both, but now hampered by arthritis, not gunpowder.
Anyway, when I was 15 back in 1965 I managed to buy a gross of M-80's. What I did with them not only made me very happy, but also became part of an incident that was mentioned on Local TV describing the rather large firecracker I made at home and gave to the TV personality who had the highest ratings on local television. Ghoulardi, had a Friday night and Saturday afternoon TV show hosting old cheesy Sci-Fi and Horror movies. His show first aired on TV in the early 1960's, and was years ahead of others who had similar formats like Mystery Science Theater 3000, Elvira’s Movie Macabre, and Svengoolie.
Here's a link to a short video clip of one of the stations on-air personalities describing what happened, and my "confession" that I posted on Facebook.
Gary, thanks for the post. That reminded me of the many "experiments" we did as kids. We didn't ever make the news but we still learned a lot and had fun.
