Why Not Both
Gary James

Columbus Day was created to honor exploration, courage, and the spirit of discovery that helped shape the modern world. Recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day doesn’t erase that—it adds depth to our understanding of history. There’s no reason we can’t commemorate both: one for the journey that connected continents, and one for the cultures that thrived long before. Honoring both is how we grow.

Well said, Gary. That's exactly the spirit I was going for. We don't have to erase one story to acknowledge another. Progress is never one-sided - every great leap forward comes with consequences we later have to face.

It's like technology itself: fossil fuels power our modern world, but they also damage the planet. Without that progress, we wouldn't have the life we enjoy today - but now it's our job to do better with what we've learned and move forward transitioning to clean energy sources.

The same goes for history. We can celebrate exploration and courage while still recognizing the pain those journeys caused. That's how we grow - by reflecting honestly, not erasing or denying.

That's really what I meant by "Reflection Day." It's not about choosing one or the other - it's about merging both into something wiser.

Too many holidays anyway, right?
