Burying a Title and Getting Back to Work
Richard Rost

I just wanted to make another Captain's Log entry because the title of my last log entry always shows up on the home page right below my picture, and it also appears in that little blurb on the customer service form that is supposed to draw attention.

The problem is that the title was Promotional Fees and Fine Print, and I really don't want anyone thinking that has anything to do with my business or that I am about to start charging some kind of hidden fees. So here we are, making a new entry to push that one down list by one. Strategic blogging at its finest.

I am in the office today working through customer service emails and just wrapped up that last Captain's Log. After this, I will be recording some videos, including a few developer lessons and some other content I have been meaning to get to. It should be a productive day, even if it ends up being a shorter one than usual.

I know I didn't get a video out yesterday. Some unexpected stuff came up, and sometimes that just happens. I am still planning to get you a TechHelp extended cut this week like I always do, along with some new developer material and hopefully a few new SQL lessons as well.

It is also my dad's birthday. Technically it was yesterday, but he is 72 now (literally my 'old man') and we are taking him out to dinner tonight. So I will be cutting out a little early, but I am hoping to get a good chunk of work done before we head out. If not, I will pick things back up when I get home.

Hope everyone has a great day. What do you have going on today?

That's funny.  I wouldn't have thought about it but you're right.  Tell Number 1 happy Birthday and have a good time.

First, I'll blast a punk for saying someone that's 74 is old.

Matt yeah, as soon as I hit publish and went back to the home page and I looked at it. I'm like, wait a minute, don't want that headline there. Let's change it up.

Thomas I had to edit it and make a correction. He's actually 72, but he's still spry as a young chicken. I just goof with him and call him old man, same thing my son does to me.

Richard Except for my legs, which stewardesses with food carts and drunks driving vehicles keep slamming into, I too would be that spry young chicken, coming up on 70. However, I still give my #2 eleven-year-old a good run for his money in a game of tag.

Thomas you're only as old as you act. And I act like an 11-year-old myself most of the time. Just ask my wife. :)

LOL!!!  When I saw that headline, I thought it was going to be about new fees.  So you got me on that one!

I'm always amazed at the amount of content you put out, so don't worry about missing a day.  Take care of yourself and family!

Tell your father (Admiral of the Star Fleet - 7 star equivalent) Happy Birthday!  And don't forget to buy him some Romulan Ale!

In the photo, notice the acoustic modem in the background? If I dug deep enough in some box in the garage, there's one that I used to dial in to clients with using a dumb terminal. Before PCs, before Internet and long before Access. Before getting a decent BASIC, writing code at 300 baud in Borough's Assembler. I don't miss any of that!

This was my first modem for my TRS-80 color computer. It wasn't an acoustic coupler like the one you're talking about, but it was pretty close. Of course, this was $149 in 1980 dollars, which is like $600 today. Damn.

Sam I made a commitment years ago, back in like 2020, to release at least some kind of new video every day. I've been pretty good about sticking to that for the past six years. Even when I go on trips or vacations, I try to make sure I have videos scheduled to go out while I'm gone. Sometimes shit happens. I went away for a weekend, then got sick, and now my dad's in town. It was kind of a perfect storm, so I'm a bit behind schedule right now. I just finished Access Developer 55 and did a TechHelp video for today. I've got more content lined up for tomorrow, and Quick Queries on Friday. Hopefully this weekend I can get caught up. I like to stay a week ahead so if something like this happens, I'm covered. I let myself fall behind this time, so that's on me. I'm a solopreneur (yes, that's a thing), so I answer only to myself, which is both a blessing and a curse. No one else to blame but me.

Thomas As the saying goes...  Been there; done that; have the T-shirt!  LOL!!!  I had an acoustic modem/dumb terminal for grad school.  Spent many an hour generating/debugging Fortran code for my thesis!

Sam  Ah yes fellow spry chicken, Fortran, the third language I learned in the 70s and used punch cards (no modem) for that. Getting straight into Assembler and Assembly for OS & chip work caused me to miss the rise of COBOL, Pascal and C.

Thomas I read "fellow spry chicken" and my brain converted it to "Fellowship of the spry chickens" and Lord of the Rings music started playing in my head.  LOL!!!  I need MORE coffee!!!
